That t3i lens

Well i officially dumped off the panasonic Hmc150 and i am getting into the dslr game.  I prefer using them alot more on most occasions.  I already have a rokinon 8mm lens which is a lens i use alot for follow cams and close up shots and i like it alot. I am specifically looking for a lens which would essentially be my "daily Driver" to use for non fisheye shots and follow cams  Possibly needing a little zoom. 

Im currently looking at the canon 28-135mm I have also been doing some reading on some other threads and people tend to say the tokina 17-50 i believe but that doesnt seem to be something that i am looking for.  THe sigma 18-35mm looks pretty damn good and would still be in my price range. I am really just looking for an upgraded lens thats going to boost the quality of my footage over the typical stock lens.

Any help would be appreciated and ill answer any questions possible.

My 28-135 was awesome, but it broke when it flew out of a golf cart :(

OP, you're going to want to be careful with those super zooms. I had an 18-135 on my 60D, and I found it was more of a waste of space than anything else. Keep a moderate zoom range. For what you want, I would go for something similar in range to your kit lens. If the 18-35 f1.8 is in your price range, that is a fantastic lens. Just don't leave it wide open all the time. The Tamron 17-50 is popular on here, and cheaper, but the Sigma is better optically.

One thing you may want to consider as well is whether or not you'll want to go full-frame in the near future. If this is the case, I would shell out for the Canon 17-40 F4L because it is absolutely fantastic on a full frame camera, but it is no better than the Tamron or Sigma on crop.

Calm down. I have had a good experience with both the 50mm and the tamron so I reccomended them and because op said he needed a "daily driver" which is what I use both these for. Just because I reccomend a lens does not mean that all other reccomendations are inccorect. I don't doubt that op will be very satisfied with eithery reccomendations or your reccomendations. Its up to him. But just cuz I reccomend a different lens doesnt mean it's a bad choice

I know the most about your film making style (since we made that naughty home movie in the bunk at WIndells) so clearly I'm the most qualified to give you advice.

The Sigma 18-35 is indeed a sick lens. Shooting at night will be a breeze since you're capable of shooting @ f/1.8 (although you'll probably want to be around 2.8 for skiing / snowboarding shots, just to be sure you nail the focus)

If you want something that's more versatile, go for the bigger zoom of the Tokina 17-55. Since you're shooting a t3i which has a crop sensor, your shots will be even more zoomy-liscious.

Nah not yet i just cant part with it. Its been collecting dust lately however as i havent touched it this season.

Tamron 17-50 is a great lens for video and is very cheap. The Canon 24-70 is quite nice too and if you want something cheaper that's just as for video check out the tamron 28-75.

Tokina 12-24 f4. Then get a 24-70 f2.8. Then get any 70-200 (or 70-210 f4)



That in my personal opinion, is the holy trinity for crop sensors.

(some would argue 11-16, 17-55, 70-200 is the way to go, but to each their own)

You could also just forego the 70-200 and the 24-70 and go for the 24-105 f4L IS on top of the Tokina (gives you a crazy 35mm eqiv. range of like 19-38/38-170 anyway, and will cost you maybe a grand or so for the two?) Then get a couple of primes for speed/DOF later.





Also, what are you using it for? If you're not shooting in dark places, you definitely don't need f1.8 on a zoom.

Wow. ~1200$ on KEH for a T2i, a 12-24 Tokina, and a 24-105L is. Mad quality right there in an affordable package that gives one a perfect entry lens for full frame land. (Tokina works down to 18/19 on full frame, too)

I use a Tokina 12-24 f4.0 DXII on my t3i and it works wonderfully.
