i feel like it depends on the size of the school. i go to IU and the majority of frat guys are the stereotypical douches, and yes i have many friends in many different frats here, so im not saying they are all that way. but i have friends who go to smaller schools such as NKU and the douchebaggery is far less there.
Is it really so bad to be Patriotic and love one's country? No it's not. Is it wrong to wear sperries and american flag chubbies? Questionable, but no.
By "jingoism" I didn't literally mean in a nationalist sense. My point is that parading one's inclusion in a purportedly (as in, not actually) exclusive social circle (as if its some sort of accomplishment) is something only douchebags do, frat and non-frat alike. What kind of person feels the need to not only validate their friendships by screen-printing it on everything imaginable, but also shove that affiliation down other people's throats and pat themselves on the back for it? Anybody who disagrees with such behavior must be, like, totally jealous, bro, rather than being annoyed by a sub-culture of loud, arrogant sub-adults who think they have dominated the social hierarchy of the work force by the ripe age of 22.
I've met cool frat people and douchy frat people. The ones who masturbate to their greek logo are invariably douchebags. None of this is aimed at you in particular, by the way.
yeah i kind of want to claify that i don't hate all greeks, i hate the greek douches. Which depending on the house and college vary in frequency. But really there are douche bro's in almost every house, and the number of douches in frats seems to be higher than out of them.
but for some people frats directly affect how well they do in college, socially and academically, and for them its great.
Calling someone a douche is a pretty ambiguous charge - "frat" is the descriptor here.
When a person subscribes to a certain subculture, they tend to exhibit behaviors that are characteristic of that subculture, can we not agree? Some frats promote obnoxious behavior, which steals the spotlight to us "geeds"; it's a case of the vocal minority serving as the paragon of frat culture instead of the silent majority (non-douches). When a person's behavior falls in line with that stereotype, we use the "frat" descriptor because it is illustrative - not because we're implying that the stereotype is an accurate representation of all frats. I've called plenty of non-frat kids "frat douches" because they acted in line with that stereotype: excessive pride that impresses nobody other than their own ilk. Although I must say, for how much flagrant pride those vocal few have, they're suspiciously sensitive to criticism...
You know how there are guido douches, skater douches, art douches, etc.? Well, there's also greek douches.
People say fake tits always look fake, which is a logical fallacy because if fake tits didn't look fake, how would you know they were fake? How many realistic-looking fake tits have we seen without having the slightest idea that they were fake? It's a matter of begging the question because our conclusion regarding the artificiality of fake tits is being used as a premise.
Same with greek culture. The non-douchy greek kids are normal, nice, people who don't fall in line with that negative greek stereotype, so we don't really perceive them as greek in an everyday setting. The douchy greek kids are always the ones who flaunt their membership (see above), which to the outside observer validates that stereotype while conflicting evidence goes unnoticed.
