We are 100 days out of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
I'm pretty excited. Even though USA is in a group of death if we can make it out we have a good shot of going beyond the first round of elimination. We've got a strong team and a good chance of doing better than any other cup.
Gotta feel bad for Messi. It's hard to imagine him getting less help from the other attacking players on the team than he has tonight and throughout the tournament. But of course nobody will remember that. I'm sure even now people are forgetting.
But congrats to Germany, they took their chance, Argentina didn't. They deserve it.

Great cup overall. One of the best Ive ever seen. Enjoyed almost every game.
Germany is the better team, but I still would have loved to see Messi put that last free kick in the net and see what happens from there. Would have been very exciting.

Yep. This was a great WC. I can't complain with the end result.
I think one major factor moving forward that FIFA needs to address is concussions. We have had too many head injuries this WC that have been overlooked. It is going to end poorly one day.

This. I love Messi and i think he played pretty good this tournament considering he was being marked by 2-3 men most games (not this one) and had barely any attacking support yet still managed to create chances but he definitely did not deserve the Golden Ball. In the knockout rounds he was pretty non existent. If this was based on Group Stage alone I would not argue but its bullshit for all those who played better. Muller, Mascherano, Neuer, Kroos,Robben, James, and Hummels all deserved it more. Messi knows he didn't deserve it.
But I agree, the games have almost all of them been great to watch, even countries I couldnt care less about had me caught infront of the TV, not being able to look away. I still get all sad inside when I think of Luis straight after the game against Germany (which quite possibly will be the craziest game I will ever witness)

haha nah, it was a pretty festive scene. thousands of people went to the obelisco to celebrate the team. its a too bad they didnt win, but it was a great cup for the albiceleste. also its a shame a couple of these drunk dickheads make it seem like people rioted which totally was not the case. people were in good spirits (though i did see a girl fight/brawl at a bar after which was AWESOME!).

Uh credibility lost here. Guy is a trooper. He takes so many knocks a game, throws his body around recklessly, and still manages to finish the entire game. He is like Mascherano, but better at dictating play. He completely controlled the midfield on his own. Khedira was SORELY missed in that triangle of Schweinsteiger, Kroos, and him.

Did you realize he was cramping in the leg where he had an injury previous to the WC? Probably not. 10+ times? Probably exaggerating a little bit there buddy. Well once was Aguero's fault and he was lucky to avoid a red for that. And the hand to the face that caused bleeding? Again, unavoidable time wasting there. The last one? But no, it is not "racist". Statistically, it seems to be correct.
To deal with this, I use a statistical technique called linear regression. Using regression, I control for the number of situations where a player is likely to be fouled in each game by finding indicators in the Opta data. Specifically, I control for the number of tackles a player wins and loses, the number of touches they have on the ball, the number of "duels" they win and lose (where a duel is a "50-50 contest between two players of opposing sides"), and their position. My regression found that SAIS players do win more fouls per minute. A player from South America, Italy or Spain will on average receive 28 percent more fouls than will players of other nationalities. A team with an extra three players from South America, Italy or Spain would receive an extra foul, on average, per game. There is less than a one percent chance that this difference was caused by random variation.
There could exist alternative explanations for these results. Perhaps, by pure chance, SAIS players happened to play more often in games against teams that are more prone to fouling. But I ran the numbers, controlling for the team a player plays against, and the results still stood.
Another alternative explanation I have not ruled out is ability. It might just be that South American, Italian and Spanish players are better than players of other nationalities, and that better players receive more fouls (it is harder to tackle a good player fairly without fouling them). To try to deal with this, I added controls for a wide set of indicators that measure a player's ability. Since indicators of a defender's ability differ from midfielders/strikers, I control for different indicators in each case. For both groups, I control for goals, assists, key passes, unsuccessful and successful passes and dispossessions. For the defenders, I additionally control for indicators such as clearances and blocks. For strikers: shots on target, dribbles, and through balls.
After adjusting for ability, SAIS defenders no longer draw more fouls than defenders of other nationalities. But the earlier results still stand for midfielders and strikers. South American, Italian, and Spanish midfielders and strikers appear to receive significantly more fouls per minute than players of other nationalities even after controlling for a wide set of indicators of ability.
