omnidataItaly dictated the tempo and pace of the game, yes England had some rushes, but looked disorganized and despite a slightly shaky Italian defence (due to the injury of De Sciglio Chiellini had to play LB something he was clearly very uncomfortable at) there was hardly any threat, after the 2-1, Italy really just sat back and went in defensive mode as we all know Italy likes to do.
And my god the way Pirlo dictated play is incredible, those pinpoint perfect passes, those little turns which instantly open up half the field and all whilst maintaining a light jog, no running, just a light jog, that man has such a vision.
England wanted to play that counter-attacking offense, but once the ball reached 20-30 yards away, there was still little on-ball pressure. To me it seemed they were waiting for a mistake rather than a pressuring for a mistake.
I think with Chiellini out as a LB the Hodgson should have started a true out and out winger (Oxlade-Chamberlain) as a means to put the pressure on him with the speed of the youngster. Rooney and Welbeck did not exploit that as well as I thought they should have. Perhaps that was part of Chiellini's doing.
But Pirlo is class. That freekick, wow.
dogardTo be fair, I don't think England were too bad. Probably had most of the attacking play in the first half. Sterling looked dangerous and I hope he starts the next game. Looked shaky at the back though and got sloppy in the second half. However, all in all, we probably played better than I had feared against a good side.
Also, everyone in the pub thought that Sterling's early shot had gone in and after about 2 minutes of celebrating, we all looked back at the screen to see that the score was still 0-0. Never seen as many confused drunk faces in 1 place haha!
Agreed, I thought England (save Rooney) looked quite good. Sterling LOVES to run a players and is a true joy to watch play. Kid could be quite special.
The defense, especially Baines looked just a tad "off" all game, but Cahill and Jagielka both had some great moments.
I think if URG play like they did yesterday and CR does not, England has a good chance regardless to move through.
