WattsYeah. Because they've looked this way every time I've seen them play in the last year or two. The only time they were at all impressive was against Spain in the confed. cup final, and that was only because the ref let them kick the shit out of the Spanish players.
As Fun_Dip said, only one of their four starting defenders actually plays any defense. And their offense was not very good, either. They are, as a team, remarkably static in the attacking third. Whoever has the ball dribbles, and everyone else just stands and watches. The only way they created chances was by hitting long balls down the wings and taking shots from outside the 18. Absolutely no penetration at all from their short passing in and around the box. The fact of the matter is that Gustavo, Paulinho, Fred, and often Hulk, just aren't good enough to break down a strong defense.
WattsNo, there are 8 groups of 4 teams, and each team plays every other in the group and the top two teams in each group advance to the knock-out rounds, which are one and done.
Granite_StateI'm not disagreeing with you. Their D was far from adequate. Not only did they fail to move around in the backfield but their passes in general were sloppy and poorly timed. But I think their offensive is potent and hopefully they will exhibit a little more offensive force in the next match. Oscar proved himself today, I think the all needs to be forced outside to his position more, he was the only one really putting the ball into play from the corners. They play Mexico next, a disorganized squad still struggling to find an identity, especially since they went through 4 coaches in what? 6 weeks? I personally think Croatia will have been a harder test than Mexico can hope to be. And then they have Cameroon, a team whose only strength is Eto'o, and really only has speed to their advantage. I'm willing to bet they get 4-6 points these next two games. We'll see.
WattsI don't think their offense is potent, nor do I think it will be any better than it was today. I've seen nothing from Brazil in the last couple years to suggest they can play any better offensively than they did today. Oscar and Neymar are both very good, clearly, but that's it.
And, yeah, they'll probably get at least 4 points from the next two games, and get out of their group, but that's not the same as winning the world cup, is it?

Fun_dipMaking it out of group first is not remotely considered a success for Brazil. It is expected and they should easily win their group especially after this gift. If they won't wipe the floor with Mexico and Cameroon that will be a shock. The challenge is once they get to knockout stages and they play teams with elite attackers and all around top talent.
Granite_StateNah I agree. I've been a Brazil fan most of my young adult life so it's hard for me to find flaws (when I know there are many). Shit, I still have my Ronaldo national jersey from 4-5 years ago that I rock from time to time (though it barley fits). It'll be Spain or Germany that wins it all this year.

I do agree you see it more commonly in other leagues like NBA which has softened greatly since the 80's when you had the likes of the bad boy pistons etc. Those dudes were mean and tough as nails. You do see it in the NFL with a few of the more primmadonna positions like wideouts
I just think soccer is the most egregious of all the sports and it's just so painfully blatant it's a huge turn off for me.
I'm also not coming at this from a soccer hater angle. I still love playing the sport, I just really can't stand watching it
