Burning out

This isn't about me. I just want to ride all the time and ride.
BUT
I've been noticing some of my ski buddies are burning out. They just want to waste this 3 day weekend we have to spend time travelling between resorts rather than spend no ski time travelling and ending up in the same place, which has pow predicted and sunny. I asked him why he wants to waste ski time and he just said "I don't care man, I'm kind of burnt out on riding."
It's a constant battle to try and get him to go ride or even plan something in advance. Constantly blowing plans off and making it hard to find replacements as he always says at the last moment.
It's a joke, I'm kinda getting sick of his attitude and his laziness, it's such bad planning it's crazy, they literally want to waste 6 + hours travelling IN ski time rather than 4 altogether outside of ski time, to get to the same place.
Anyone got any ideas?? I want to find new ski buddies but it's pretty hard

Well if they don't want to ski then they don't want to ski. Rekindle their fiyah mang.

keeping skiing fun is all about progression.

The thing is, some people get to a point where they don't want t progress anymore because the risk is to great and for them its just not worth it. It takes a special type of personality to chase progression nonstop no matter how high the risk/reward ratio gets.

I am, it's just me alone nearly all the time now, these guys are never stoked anymore unless they're within 30m of a rail.

the only people worth spending your time/energy on are the ones you can depend on.

That's just how it is man. When you're younger everyone loves it and wants to do it all the time. As time goes on you realize that for some people it was just another hobby they liked when they were kids vs. the passion many other find.

Even some people who were into it find pressure to give up on silly things like that to pursue real jobs and grow up.

All I know is that whether it be 1 day or 50+ years I'm going to be on the hill till I die. At a crossroads right now trying to figure out my summertime situation. All I want to do is snowboard, ski, and build terrain parks for myself and others to enjoy. If I can make that a year round gig somehow I'll be going strong till I'm dead.

So they would rather travel and spend less time skiing than stay put and ski close by with no drive?

That makes no sense to me either!

After skiing and working park crew almost every day of the winter for the past 4 years I have got to the point where I only feel like riding if the snow is good. If there is any ice I dont have as much fun. I hate that I'm becoming a fair weather skier. Ready for some awesome spring skiing though.

I'm scared to ride because I have no edges and can't turn for shit if it's icy. Round edges are awesome for rails but for trails not so much. Pretty stoked on this ski venture of mine. Now my edges aren't nearly as dull as my board and I've got 2 of them grabbing each turn.


I think I'm going to ski on the shitty days. Also will probably progress a bunch more on those than I would have on a board at this point.

Im slowly trying to acquire snowboarding gear for crappier days and I'm trying to keep one pair of skis semi nice so I can ski when its icy. Skiing trails with no edge is just miserable unless its spring skiing and everything is mashed potatoes.

There is a sure fire way to fire your ski life back up! All you need is weed, your friends and the movie Party Cloudy! Get super high and watch it. This is literally the purest level of stoke and should be able to get anyone totally siked to go skiing!

Skiing is one of the easier sports/hobbies to burn out on. The amount of money it takes, driving to the mountain if you don't live right by it, all the equipment to maintain, reliant on winter weather, ski boots, and the list goes on really. So I can see how a lot of people burn out on it. Personally, I go through phases where I want to ski a lot, and then I dial it back for a bit, repeat process.

Working at a mountain is always an option. If shred is on your mind there are smaller mountains with pretty sick parks that aren't that expensive but it's still hit or miss. I see them growing more if they want to compete.


For equipment you can get some stuff stupidly cheap especially skis and bindings. Also outerwear. Or you can just use the shit you have. You don't have to buy new stuff every season.


But like I said before it's either a hobby or a passion. There are a lot of people who will never burn out because that's their life. Instead of being a hobby on the side that they no0 longer have time for it's the driving force that keeps the universe in balance. Without it nothing else makes sense, life is too chaotic. Those days on the hill can be all that keeps that person sane.

Very true, I can agree with that. I always wish I had grown up in a mountain town, or close to a resort because I feel like it woulda put skiing as a definite passion instead of a hobby. I love it, but it's always been an uphill battle to keep it in my life. I'll never completely stop though, no way!

I hear you. How far away were you? If you don't mind seasonal work and low pay you could always work at a mountain for a winter. Get lots of days on snow and get stoked shredding with friends all the time.

At the time time everybody's into different things. Everybody has there hobbies, everybody has their passion. As long as you're doing something that makes you happy it's all good.

Shit always happens toward the end of the season with my friends. Way harder to get out to the mountain when spring rolls around because most of my friends are done for the season.
