Adblock question

So I had ablock off at your request for awhile. I don't mind the adds because they are no longer animated (why I deleted them in the frist place.

Then today I saw and interesting looking ad, and actually clicked it. But it didn't take me to a website, instead it asked if I wanted to run a plug in.

That got me thinking. I know that you lose revenue to adblock. I am not opposed at all to seen advertisements. I had no idea what script the add wanted to run, probably just a flash animation, but you never know.

Looking into it deeper, I have found a list of potential trackers on each NS page:

first of all, which one of these must be unblocked for you to get add revenue?

Chartbeat is real-time analytics.

DoubleClick is what we use to serve our ads.

Google Analytics is what we use for our in-depth analytics of the site.

LinkSmart is a product used more by the other mags to develop on-site link building between articles.

so in order for ns to get ad revenue, I must allow google to track my online habits, so they can direct targeted ads at me?

I realize that NS is not at all to blame for this, but it's still kind of messed up. I think a lot of people who are using adblock are not using it because they don't like seeing ads, it's because they don't like this breach of privacy.

meh. I just use ghostery in my browser and a couple other packages. I use .tor for some activism related things, but that is more so the government/law enforcement doesn't see it.

It's not the end of the world for me if a company tracks my online activity, but that doesn't mean I am going to let them just straight up do it. It takes like 10 seconds to add ghostery, and it seems to work fairly well.

that mindset, that the government will only get "the bad guys", is pretty dumb. Sometimes you can break the internet law and not even know it. Why not try to be as anon as possible? You have nothing to lose, except your freedom if you don't.

sometimes illegal activities are morally justified. For If someone was going to talk about liberating animals, from a farm or a lab (not that I would ever endorse this), they should use tor.

But that's really off topic. I shouldn't have to use that type of security when I am browsing the web semi-anonymously. If the adds in magazines had little chips in them that tracked where I went, and what else bought, I would tear those pages out of the magazine as soon as I got it. They don't though, so I don't bother to rip them out. If online ads were like magazines, and just showed me ads, then I would not block them. Even if ads just sent the advertisers info that the add had been viewed, with nothing to identify me, I would be ok.

I guess that's just what NS has decided they want. you can choose to watch ski videos elsewhere if ads bother you. vimeo is great. often the same videos are on vimeo, and it takes way less time to open a new tab and search for it there.

but you literally can't browse the forums without having companies track you, unless you block them out. there is a difference between being inconvenience by ads, and having your privacy violated by them. the picture ads in the forums do not inconvenience me at all, so I would allow them if they were not tracking me.
