Snaking vs hot-lapping

How do you guys justify cutting people up when you are hot lapping, and then get really pissed when someone snakes you? Whats the difference? If someone snakes you, and then says they were hot lapping, will you forgive them?

Enlighten me

I will typically wait at the top for my turn if there are people going, but if anyone is waiting at all I will go.

Not sure how your park works, but usually there are one or two main spots people stop. If you stop anywhere else, you have to make sure you're not cutting people off.


As for "snaking" if you're waiting to drop in to jumps or rail section from these designated stopping spots, if it's good to go and no one is going it's pretty chyll to just drop from anywhere. I also think it's mellow to drop in right after your friends even if you're not "in line" which is dumb imo. I think you only "snake" when someone is clearly dropping in and you cut them off. But in the real world, snake or be snaked.

If another skier snaked me I would probably let it slide as long as they were doing sick stuff. But if a snowboarder did, its a whole other story.

you have to look uphill to make sure no one is hot lapping before you drop.

sometimes it's just plain unavoidable if your speeds are really different. don't kill anybody over it. it's an honest mistake.

Pretty much.

I usually enjoy just flowing through the park, I really don't like it when people stop at every single feature.

#3 don't stop where you obstruct a run #4 look up and yield to on coming skiers In the park or anywhere shit doesn't change

at the small mountain i go to in NY, there is really no such thing as a hot lap. everyone hikes most features

hot lapping is fine when its not busy but if there are made people waiting to hit a feature then just careful sneak to the front if you don't wanna wait. Snaking is easy, people can freak out but if they reallyl wanted to drop they would have

Hot lapping is pretty hard when there's tons of people around, like on the weekends. But I guess you just gotta be aware of how many people are around you.

Snaking happens when someone is starting to drop and you cut in front of them. Hot lapping is just taking a nonstop line. The way I see it, if you stop before a feature, people taking a non-stop line have the right of way.

person skiing the continuous line should always have right of way IMO, if you choose to stop mid lap you need to merge back in around the people skiing continously

Also, kinda a side note, but kinda related...when stopping, stop to the side of the feature, not in front of it (especially when the snow is sugar/slushy), that way you don't make a mogul in the in run and/or bury the lip.

Just gotta be aware of people around you. If I am lapping and decide to do in between rail lines I always check up to make sure there isn't a rider skiing the continuous line, and if there is I always yield. Whoever had the analogy for merging onto the highway is completely how I ride the park.

And at the standard drop points for lines I usually just play it like a 4 way stop sign intersection in order to decide who drops next.

anyone who has skied 7springs knows the pain of having to make sure they don't snake someone on the jump line after the hip in the alley. I swear there is AT MINIMUM 10 people standing on top of that hip at all times.

If they snakee can catch the snaker to confront them; than you are snaking. but if the laps are too hot for the snakee to catch the snaker than you are hot lapping.

Well in the land of 10,000 lakes we can all afford to get snaked. I really never get snaked but I do feel like I do snake more than people snake me, but I also do go a lot faster than the 12 year old snowboarders in my park so I guess its really not snaking just me doing me and them only hitting 3 feet of the rail.

there's a blind approach to the biggest kicker at my hill, I'm crossing over to where my friends are hanging out and the one time I forget to look uphill is the time that someone is hauling ass to the jump (literally 6 people in the park). There isn't time for either of us to avoid eachother so I just get trucked by him. Recognizing that I was being an idiot I help him up, apologize about 15 times, and then pump him up to hit the jump again.

me and my buddys normally yell "HONKEY DICK" before we drop for a hot lap, after 2 seasons people are starting to realize what we mean when we yell it.

except when the park is super crowded, people make too big a deal out of calling drop vs lapping, usually the same people who throw their arms up and bitch and moan when a gaper comes within 10 feet of them on an inrun. show how rad you are and pass them and just hit the damn feature

like someone said, if you can merge on a highway you can figure out how to hit a freakin park feature with people around

only time i wait a long time and am careful about dropping is if im trying something i know i might fall on

If you're stopping after every feature to sit and socialize with your friends the person hitting things in a run has the right to keep going. That said if you're almost to the feature and they cut around you at the last second that's pretty shady, although you should look uphill before you drop anyway.

I literally have no idea about skiing real parks haha

Anyway in fridges all you can do is hotlap, if you wanna stop you have to skip a feature cos their so close you'd never get enough speed back.
