Armed men take control of Crimean Airport

Happened earlier this morning. Lots of speculation going on as to who they are.

I doubt the west would risk getting tangled up in a war with Russia. I also doubt Russian would move beyond the Crimean.

Crimea is a semiautonomous region of Ukraine and is a majority ethnic Russian. Recently, there have been a strung of protests in favor of leaving Ukraine and joining Russia.

I see Russia using the turmoil as
A) a chance to strengthen their control on Ukraine (obvious)
B) swallow up some territory that is already very Russian to begin with (more risky for Russia... but seems to be what's happening)

The US ambassador is leaving Russia, but that's been known for a while since he stated he was stepping down about a month ago.

Yuri Vorobyov, Ms Matviyenko's deputy, said during a debate broadcast live by Russian state TV that US President Obama had "crossed a red line" and "insulted" the people of Russia. "I think it is necessary to demand that the Russian president recall the Russian ambassador from the United States of America," he said.

The speaker of Russia's upper house, Valentina Matviyenko, is taking steps to ask President Putin to recall the Russian ambassador from the US - AFP.

Ukraine signing their death warrant. Here's the deal:

They don't have nukes, and the PM is claiming they can make them in 3-6 months.

Russia can very easily take these statements and level Kiev in a day if they so choose, and do it semi-legally. Very dangerous thing to say.

As they should, but Russia will walk in, say something along the lines of "Threats to russian lives/ threats from Ukrainian gov/ We will act to protect our citizens" and the rest of the security council will sputter and condemn them, and then next week russian armor will roll up and down Crimea.

why are so many Americans making it seems like Russia's actions are all about them? At this point it really has nothing to do with the US at all, yet you have American politicians saying stuff like "Russia seems to want another Cold War".

Double standard issues.

People criticize the US for getting involved in foreign affairs yet condemn us when we do not.

Besides, lets be honest, the UN is toothless and gutless in this situation. What other foreign country can stand up to Russia?

(This is from what I've read on twitter, so it may be incorrect)

The guy facing away in the last picture is using a rifle/grenade launcher used by Spetsnaz. They're wearing white armbands, which are associated with Pro-Russian forces in Crimea. I'm not sure whats going on in the picture, looks like a firefight? not seeing anything about that on twitter.
