Hate College

Who else hates college. Im a freshman and I hate it there's never anything to do, I don't have any "real" friends, and I'm not into partying. I also can't seem to get any motivation for doing work and my grades are dropping because of it. I feel like I'm paying only to suffer for four years. Sorry for ranting but how do u guys stay entertained and get any motivation to do work.

Meh in the same boat to a point. Mainly I'm bored and hate being stuck on campus as a freshman with no car. I have a few close friends. And if I didn't go out on the weekends I would absolutely hate life

It's a really small school so I'm relatively familiar with most all the kids but I can't seem to make good friendships like I had in high school.

I'm trying to. And yes I realize the real world sucks I have had jobs but I honestly would rather be working and making money then spending lots of money on something that sucks.

I bitched and moaned for my frosh year and came to an understanding that I am here to get a job.
I could careless about conquering the campus and putting on a fake act.

Just stick it out man. It sounds like you're giving up. I'm a freshman as well and I hated my school for a while, but it gets a lot better if you just put some damn effort in. Making friends takes time, so you're writing off the social scene way too early. Exercise more.

show up to class and leave when its lifted, none of this gilling at the cafeteria bullshit is necessary if you don't want to. Find hobbies. Get good at things, gain the most assets by your own, its better than having to rely on people to do/get things.

This is basically what I'm doing now. I ski and skate I've found these two things by far the most fun things to do and I can escape reality when I'm doing them. Trust me the last thing I care about is being popular and conquering the campus.

freshman year is full of boring classes and lots of partying. If you are not partying I could see why it would suck.

Second year you will get a taste for what university, and your program is about. You will get to take introductory classes in whatever field you chose, and therefor start to meet more professors and students in your department.

Third and fourth year is where you take the basics and use them to get in depth about a subject. In some programs (like physics), you will basically have to retake the "real" version of your intro courses in third year.

Either way, what that means is second year is where you should really decide if you like your program, or just university in general. If you are not enjoying first year (academic) stuff, don't worry, no one does. However if in second year you are not getting excited about the material you are learning, then you probably will not want to spend the next two years learning about essentially the same thing. Upper level courses will kick your ass if you don't enjoy the material.

as for the social life, by the time you are in junior year, you will not have time for much of it anyways. You are basically forced into friendships with the people in your program. which can be awesome.

as far as motivation for studying goes, read "think and grow rich" my dad got it for me for Christmas this year and since reading it i have felt a dramatic increase in my ability to get motivated to study. it has a few chapters that i rolled my eyes at but the overall message really changed my work habits. I do fully accept that my changing work habits may have just been a result of going to university and the book was unrelated, but if you have nothing better to do you should try reading it. The book does require an open mind though

for the friends part keep trying to make some and if you truly cant seem to make any just transfer to a college one of your friends is already going to

You don't need to hangout on campus.. make friends at the hill, the skatepark, in town,
if you work you will become friendly with chill coworkers

obviously your not as close with people you've know for 4 months then your HS friends of four years. i bet a few months into freshmen year of high school you were still figuring things out.

college is a massive adjustment from high school so it takes a while before you really settle and start to enjoy yourself. my first term i felt like i didnt like school and was just struggling to keep my head above water, but the more you settle and start to make a place for yourself the better it gets.

Take more interesting shit?

I loved freshman year since all I did was ski and take solid, exciting upper-level shit. The one giant lecture class I took (schools, in this case, are very different) was about as interesting as bologna rotting in the sun.

One thing to remember: learn as much valuable shit as possible. Avoid generic programs (eg humanities, art history, communications, etc) and courses - not only does it affect your drive but it fucks you down the road. Gain actual skills to put that educational investment to work for you after you're finished.

Oh, and stop being a little bitch.

Are you at the right school? A place where you can truly flourish? I'm stuggling at my school despite the clubs I join, the cool teachers. I'd look at some other schools, find a place you connect to/with. Chin up, it's a bit rough, but you'll find a place you belong at.

You sound like an apathetic twit.

Find something to do. Get involved with your faculty or get into sports, talk to the people in your residence. Don't expect everyone you meet to be a "real" friend right away. Working relationships turn in to close ones after a while. If you sit in your room fapping out of boredom all day you deny yourself the chance to make any friends. You can also be social without partying. Half of my program is islamic and they still manage to have fun with each other, fill their weekends, and get better grades than everyone else. Also, if you hate doing your coursework, maybe you're in the wrong program/shouldn't go to college.

Either drop out, or stop bitching.

If you don't like college drop out and get a job then you'll have an understanding of how much realer and harder life gets after college. I used to be in school I hated it, started doing poorly dropped out, now I work as a steel worker from 6 am to 4 pm every day, and now im kicking myself, for not taking advantage the opportunity that college presented.

consider taking a year or semester off. I'm considering it, everyone I've talked to that's taken time off came back with a huge appreciation for it and said it was a really good decision to do it
