I get the whole its because of where the money was coming from but still this is just bullshit, i say we make a kickstarter to get vice to make a real "history of freeskiing" to show what really happened the good and the bad, not a bunch of teenagers peeing in cups so they can go to the olympics and have their sponsors claim they got freeskiing in the olympics.

Im not hating on the olympics or any of these athletes abilities or work ethics but to claim they built freeskiing is just atrocious.

Devin logan is probably my least favorite skier now. Not only did she talk shit about a legend of the sport she also makes skiing look like its just a huge drama show

I'm not saying that these people are forgetting who Tanner is, but Freeskiing has already existed for so long that some are not old enough to remember or experience the impact of Tanner. I was just riding the lift with a 12 year old freeskier the other day and he knew who TWAL was but had no idea who Tanner is

He and Simon, and a few others, were the first riders to legitimize competition freeskiing. He did not create it, but without him, Simon, Candide, Peter Olenick, Jon Olson, etc, The x-games and in turn Olympics would not exist like they do today for skiing.

They may not have invented the sport, but they sure as fuck took it far past the level that the New Canadian Airforce got it to (no disrespect).

Oh and he helped create Armada, which, along with LINE, has inspired all of your other favorite brands like Surface, ON3P, and any other twintip only company.

Don't usually agree with alot of Tanner's Opinion but agree here. Glad he called them out with out coming across as an angry prick. Show was shitty.

Also, T-wall calling out girls skiing was fucking hilarious.

I didn't see the episode, but Tanner's response is incredibly childish. All the profanity and poor grammar makes him look like a punk. I have no respect for anyone who goes on ranting and raving in an nonconstructive manner like this. There is a right way to do things, and this isn't it.

Northface paid for this, stop acting like VICE had the final say in any of this. This was just a publicity tactic to bring light on certain sponsored Olympic athletes.

Of anything the name of the doc was absolutely wrong, it should have been like #roadtosochi or something.

I agree with Tanner for the most part, he was a big PART of freeskiing early history. Although, I wouldn't call him THE biggest part because that would be crazy egotistical to believe you were the one force that created all of this. A better word would be influential.

Devin isn't wrong when she alludes to playing by the rules of the olympics to be involved. They arn't going to change their rules (which I do think are silly in many respects) just because someone comes along and doesn't agree with them. So if you want to play your going to have to adhere to them. Simple as that.

Freeskiing will always be freeskiing, just dont give a shit about what the public thinks. Mostly because you did not care what they thought about freeskiing before.

The Switchuation strikes again. Honestly, I can't be the only person annoyed by Tanner's constant insistence that everything free skiing is today was something he just decided to jizz out one day. Dude... Anybody can plainly see the VICE article was atrocious but for fuck's sake... "Something you and your friends made"??? Well ok there, Al Gore- thanks for the internet! Way to make it sound like they should have just followed you around and simply retold your version of the history of skiing exactly as slurred by you, because fuck everyone else everywhere but within a 20 foot radius of Tanner Fucking Hall at any time.


It sucks because I want to like Tanner. He reminds me of a lot of people I like irl to some degree. I admire him for his skiing and (usually)appreciate his lack of filter and the obvious amount of fun he's always having but Jeeeeeeeeeeeesus dude... You make Kanye sound humble these days. I just want to know how you go from someone who is an innovator pushing boundaries and driving force in the sport ---> talking shit about those who are now rising or even struggling to gain a foothold in the industry as it changes? Go ahead, lose your shit that someone dare green screen for an ad to upgrade from ramens for a few weeks. Scream and cry that the Olympics don't want the OGs- which they never have anyways fyi. With every angry, confused and ego-centered post you make, you remove yourself further from what you think you stand for- ambassadorship and sharing the love for advancing a fucking awesome sport as it morphs and changes with technology, skill and time with others who share that same love. Congrats, you are now the proverbial old man, yelling at "those goddam kids on your lawn" and telling tall tales to anyone still listening about how you made all of this. All of it.




P.S.- Plake was running this shit before you sprouted your first pube and he's the most humble guy on earth to this day who is even more stoked today than he was in the 90s. This is my argument in a nutshell. Give it up and be more awesome to more people already. You're better than that.

Okay so I am a big Tanner Hall fan and I think he really helped push the sport, but this comment he made abut Vice is little hypocritical and very poorly written. If Tanner had stopped to think and then written an interesting, strongly worded paragraph about how he feels, Vice would take him more seriously, I know I would.

Right now I think Vice is just laughing their asses off at his use of grammar and CAPITAL LETTERS.

But then again, he didn't graduate high-school....

Sounds like Vice could have avoided this blow up by changing the title of the documentary a bit. The Title of the doc is extremely misleading in regards to what the actual documentary is about.

That being said, Tanner sounds a little butthurt that someone called him a burnout. To me, his blow ups are just hilarious. I don't care either way about it. I just like to ski.

I didn't read this whole thread so maybe someone else talked about it but there IS an original, alternate cut that portrays Tanner and also more roots of the sport, in a more complete and gracefull way. NBC had as much to do with this final cut as anyone at Vice or others involved because they wanted an American skier focused, olympian focused episode to fit with their type of programming.

Instead this final cut of the episode used Tanner more as the controversial "other voice" than the god-father / legend that he is. And HE IS. For anyone who doubts that, you aren't old enough to remember Tanner INVENT park skiing and style again, and again, and again in Happy Dayz, Session 1242 and movies to follow.

I do think to come down on this episode as not showing the "roots" of the sport but instead showing new names on the scene isn't necessarily fair either because that wasn't what this video was about. This video was about the road to the olympics, this year, immediately preceding the games. Can only do so much in 1 hour. But it is hard because there are so few pieces about our sport broadcast at this high of level that we expect the MOST out of them when they do air.

I really hope that someone is able to post the ORIGINAL cut of this Vice doc, it also ends with a pretty poweful moment of the Wells fam saying a proper prayer before one of them lays down a sick run in the pipe.

For Devil's Advocate sake ask any of them and tanner was a direct inspiration. 8/10 times in this argument Tanner laid the ground work and helped shape ever single newschool aspiring skier, including Devin Logan,

For whatever reason, The way the interview was portrayed and or cut in the final piece, it came off very poor and was probably put it in to stir the pot, and it did!. Since Mike Rogee is active on this project and this site and even proclaimed somewhere he was happy the way the piece turned out, You should be ashamed of yourself, im sure at one point in your skiing life time you looked up to tanner, and the fact you'd let that shit and that type of BS come out in a documentary that you are proud of is sickening, how much did you get paid, im sure your answer could be nothing, whatever the reason, really bad "producing" job on your part as a journalist or whatever your role was in that project.

No, no it doesn't. This is FREEskiing. Sure there are diciplines on the competition side of things but that is only a small fragment of the sport. We, who ski for the sake of skiing don't lable our skiing. We are just having fun.

The very point of this sport is to be free and ski however you like and the competion side of things is taking some of that freedom away. The title is completely out of place.

And how could they not focus on the aspect of ski films and edits??
They even used stept footage, why not talk about that???

Why the hell didn't they interview people like JP Auclair, Seth Morrison or Candide Thovex (might have been hard if lives in France but, whatever) who have been in the scene for years? And the video didn't tell a shit about history of the freeskiing. It was only how Devin and the others prepared for the olympics and about Tom's injury.

Was just stirring the pot! But I agree, Tanner would take him down. Sammy and Dane on the other hand charge hard in all aspects of skiing aside from maybe pipe.

I have no doubt in my mind Tanner inspired all 3 of the skiers I mentioned in more ways then one...but my post was in regards to their current ski level attaining to the 5 aspects of skiing mentioned in the initial post I quoted, not the fact he may have been a role model for them.

Devin Logan is fucking brutal at skiing and probably one of the least athletic skiers in the game. Burnt out? Tanner has worked harder then anyone to come back from multiple career ending injuries and is one of the fittest skiers around, the amount of dry land training and tramp time the dude puts in is insane. Sure he might say some crazy shit sometimes, but he's crushed every aspect of the sport for the last decade. Devin will never be close to the level Tanner was on in his comp years, she should exercise some humility as she has neither the athleticism or skill to back up anything she says.

Rants about fat skis, snowboarders, lift accessed backcountry - and that's only in the last few years. At least Plake is kinda funny about it, but rants from aging legendary athletes are nothing new. If Michael Jordan wants rip on his high school basketball coach for bad decision making in his hall of fame speech, he can do that. And Tanner can rip on Vice for making a lame documentary.
