He was attempting to demonstrate the safety of the handguns by holding them to his head and pulling the trigger.

The third gun fired, and the man was struck in the head.

The only asshole here is the guy who was drinking all day, put a loaded gun up to his head, and said, "see, honey, as long as I have the safety on (oh wait, I don't), the gun won't fiBLAM!" Now his kids have to grow up without a father.
