Best part time job for a high school kid

I'm 16 and need to get a part time job. I've already applied to a few basic places and I'm hoping to find a job that I won't hate. I don't live near any ski shops or mountains that are hiring so unfortunately that's out of the question. What are some of the best part time jobs you guys have worked/heard of? I have no prior working experience

In the same position dude. I applied to a skate shop last year but they never ended up hiring anyone so I ended up working at my dads work and it fucking sucked.

Golf courses work pretty well. They dont pay that bad and theres always bitch work for a 16 year old to do. It worked for me

Try to get a job at like a family owned business or a small shop, it's way more fun and if your lucky they'll pay you cash and you won't get taxed or anything. Pretty lax most of the time too

Valvoline. Sounds hard but they are always looking for people, they'll train you, and they pay well. Plus you get to work on cars which is a lot more fun then many other jobs.

would say get a food handlers permit, but not that many kids i know are stoked on food bidness. it pays pretty good though if you want to make some coin to save. if all else fails, i know kids that make almost $11/hour at McD's. and they said its really not bad of work at all.

During the school year? Idk, the best option might be to work in a cafe or small restaurant, something like that. Taking orders, serving, clearing tables. I did that for a few weeks in the summer and make $800. I also got a job at a kayak store. Cleaning boats and uloading/loading for tours and stuff. If I can I hope to be able to take some people out in a few years

Any job really, the amount of old people that are taking all the easy jobs just cause they want a job is ridiculous. Here's some tips though, take your resume AND cover letter (personalized for the job you are applying for) in yourself if possible, always give it to the manager (oh yeah go when you know the managers gonna be there, which is day shift). Try calling them after too and ask if they have more info on whats going on with hiring and all that. And hey if ya dont get a part time job right away, the summers always gonna have plenty of jobs, and then you can get a shitty 12hr factory job that'll give you lots of dosh and make you never complain about any other job you get.

I would suggest a delivery/transport job for sure. Not necessarily pizza delivery; I work at a car part place driving parts around town and it's great.

If you're very motivate or lucky you might find something you love no problem. Generally most people start out with jobs they don't like that much.

Dishwashing is good. Free food not super complicated you can work nights after school like fridays or something.

The biggest thing I can tell you is to work hard at every job and leave on good terms. If you hate a job you don't have to do it for ever, find something else and leave. What you shouldn't do is show up late, be a douche, not get things done, and leave on bad terms.

If you leave every job on good terms when you apply for a job you like, those references are going to come in handy. Also down the line if you need some work quick with one of those previous employers also very helpful.

Probably my least favorite job ever was checking tickets at a mountain after I shattered my collarbone/couldn't work park crew. I doubt my boss or any of the customers though anything other than I loved the job as I made the best of things. If I wanted to go back to work at that mountain later on or use them as a reference for a future job, I know I have 1 more solid reference.

Also it's nice having a little bit of money at a time when nobody really has any money. Even the little things like food, going to the movies, or whatever else kids are doing these days it's nice to have some $$$.

Try to find somewhere super close to your house. I'm in the same situation and got a job like a half mile from my house at a banquet hall washing dishes and bussing tables. Easy money, occasional big tips (high class place), and no paying for gasmoney to work.

McDonald's! Not the most interesting job by a long shot, but it teaches you great working skills. Flexible availability/schedule, generally easy job, not too serious. Some franchises will even give out money for those going to university or college. I have been working at mcdons for a bit more thab a year and a half and its decent! Having had worked at McDonald's apparently also looks good on the resume.

Pizza place, small restaurants, hardware story, gas station, fast food, grocery store, golf course, pharmacy, tree trimming. In my town, that's where you go.

wherever you can find a job. dont be picky at your age, and save your money. once you graduate you will realize how many expenses you actually have. living at home saves you soooooooo much money.

my favorite job i've had so far (besides ski and snowboard instructor for tiny munchkins) has been my sales associate job at petco.

i would have to agree with a caddying job at a country club. or any job at a country club. they get paid so much. but just go onto websites of stores in your area that you go to a lot and fill out apps. you don't have to love your job, just remind yourself it's getting you money and experience for your resume.

No, talking with some adults in various industries. They have said McDonald's teaches good working skills that are useful nkt only in a working environment but tral wprld. No idea if this is true, I guess I'll find out in a few years

Yard work. Use your parent's mower, edger, and blower (or buy them yourselves). Charge like $25, do a good job, schedule a time to come every week. If you want more money, knock on a few of the neighbors doors of the places you already work on.

I'm not saying I don't think working at mcdonalds can teach you skills toward other jobs, but I don't see how it does anything special over another job.

Also To OP. As someone else said. Not a bad idea to save some loot while you're still in high school. Once you move out spare $$$ is hard to come by.

I def wouldn't over work to the point where you don't have any fun though. Money is great and saving some up now can help you later on, but you're only young once, so make sure you still have some time to live a bit.

For sure. I didn't do it but had a lot of friends that did. Almost got into it, not sure what happened. They make decent money and it's not really shitty work at all.

Also ski intructor is good especially if you have to buy your own pass. That $250+ save on the pass is worth it alone sometimes. Also can be pretty rewarding to help teach the next generation of shredders how to actually ski properly.

If you live near a mountain work ski school in the winter and cater parties the rest of the year. I make $9 an hour but get paid a shit-ton in tips.

Did this my junior/senior year of HS. Only it was even easier because all I had to was drop the food off, set it up a little bit and be on my way. There is a senior home near where I catered, and every week they would get food and always tip at least twenty bucks.

Starbucks/tullys barista. It's pretty hard, but it pays pretty good ($12 an hour around here) and colleges love it. It's on of the best jobs to put on a resume as a highschooler. Plus you get to flirt with white chicks all day err day.

See if your local bike shop employs any part time or commissioned bike builders, you normally get around $10 for every bike you build so it can rack up pretty good

caddy at a country club. if you work hard and aren't an idiot you can make 4k a summer even if you don't know a lick about golf. if you do, it makes caddying a lot easier and the money literally piles up.

If you live near a Home Depot apply to one. They take pretty much anyone starting in April to work in the garden, you can make $11.20/hour.

Also forgot to mention jobs that pay under the tbale can be very helpful. You might get 7 or 8 washing dishes, but that's like getting 9 or 10 on the books. Also if you have some idea what you want to do later in life of even in the near future that's helpful. Working as a dishwasher is good if you want to cook or even bartend.

Working as a ski instructor if you eventually want to move up the ranks in that industry.


Idk, just kill it at whatever you do. Take pride in your work whether it's the shittiest job or the best job. try and pick up some new skills where you're at. Show them that you can handle youre job no problem, and want to learn some new stuff. Even the most random work experience can help you land a better job later on.

I worked at a lawn maintenance company for 2 year. Yup I raked grass for 8$/h. After I got into rock climbing, I worked at the climbing gym for 5 years. Best job ever!

My favourite job was working in Ontario Parks for the summer. I got 2-4 month contracts (longer when I stayed for a fall), the pay was ok considering my age and what I did, plus there was opportunity to work your way up a couple contracts and end up hauling $20 or more an hour. Students start with about $10 an hour though. Oh, and you live in the forest with a bunch of other horny teenagers. Its a hoot and a holler.
