I use metal rails in my yard, but, if i ever do use pvc i would cut the tube down the middle the long way so the rail is twice as long. It would be a decent amount of work but worth it in the end.
yeah then how would you attach that to a wood frame? you can't screw that down... To build that rail I PMd Andy Parry himself for build advice... I'll never build any other way
It's a good idea to put vertical plywood underneath the rail, I nearly destroyed my knee when my ski went under the rail, caught on a support, and twisted hard on front swap yesterday.
8' is to short, anything over 20 on kinks is sketchy. Actually like 15 but people always seem do do steep kinks in the back yard.
And PVC and 2x4s are cheap as fuck. You could build a ton of different rails for cheap.
Flat rails, aframe, elbow, zrail, donkey, if you have a hill dfd. Could build a whole yard full of stuff for barely anything. Also you don't need any ridiculous tools. If you have a drill and a miter saw you can get down on pretty much anything.
If you wanna get weird and know someone who welds you could build a nice metal flat rail for around 200. If you have steel lying around and know somebody that welds/would help you out that might be the way to go.
IMO a dfd needs to be longer than most people think. Something like 6'x3'x6' might sound like a dope rail but probably won't be that sick once you build it. Also watch how steep you make the kink. I've heard people talk about making kinks over 30 degrees on here before. Mellow is the way to go. Decent length, smooth kink, and you got yourself something nice and trickable.
Word I miss read that. Why the fuck would anyone cut a pvc pipe in half for that? IF you're really that brok come to my house and you can have 5 or 6 maybe more 10 or 12 footers of 2" from my garage that I'm never going to use. Maybe I'll make a potato gun.
I just cruise the neighborhoods looking for scrab wood every summer, I have a welded 20ft double barrel rail, and with PVC I found I have 3 12 ft tubes with frames that can be set up any way I want. Make flat rails so you can just put them anywhere and make kinks with snow
If you're doing it in your backyard and it doesn't have to be stupidly portable I wouldn't go that route. I mean if you have the loot to drop whatever. Not saying you're going to buy a box for cheap(unless you get lucky on CL) but for backyard purposes you might as well save some money.
Can rock the 1 inch pvc tubes several wide for the box feel. Those are dirt cheap and you can go any length and add kinks. Could get some pvc sheeting for not that much, find some steel or buy some(maybe 40-50 for a 10' tube) and throw one on each side of a wooden frame. Or if you really wanna get weird get some. For backyard use I think the best thing to do is build stuff. It'll save you money, you can make more/bigger stuff, and safety isn't really an issue like if it were for a mountain.
Also the only rail werx features I've seen in person are 2 out of 4 missing the legs. 1 is about to lose it's legs. There were some at the mountain when I started working there. Precisely the reason you don't use things made for the backyard on a mountain.
I must say that the new boxes look much more legit than the ones we had though. These ones didn't have any kind of coping or anything. I'm thinking of harvesting the topsheets and making a jersey barrier or 2 in the off season.
I have thought of this. My idea of attaching the pvc to the wood would be route groves into the wood then caulk them in. If you get the right caulk it will hold. Only down side is its alot of work and I have the tools but most people dont have a router
You could always build a bigger drop in and 1/4 to 1/2 way down it put a flat then another down to the ground. Would be a nice setup for learning on down features. Down rails, down flats, dfds.
I was building one for a DFD in my yard but then realized I spend far too much time at the mountains and gave it away. HAd a 17' tall drop in and 40'+ of steel tubing, a shit ton of 2x4s and pvc.
Also nobody lives near me and setup seemed like it might be too gnarly to shred alone at night when I got home form the mountain.
If you have some space, a few bucks, a decent saw, some spare time, why the hell not?
