Learning vs. Sucking

Hello Newschoolers Brethren,

Ive never posted a thread on here (as you can see Im quite new) but I've been following NS for a while without an account and have been into skiing for a few years now.
Three years ago my friend showed me Revolver (which Im suprised not many people seem to like) and two days later I traded in my snowboard for a pair of Volkl Alleys. It was the best decision I've ever made. I dont get to the hill as much as I used to because I go to school in Mass (I lived in Maine) so I'm still learing.
Heres my problem. Ive been reading the "How Good do you Have to be to Wear Saga" thread and it got me super bummed out. It was all about how people who suck wear Saga and Level 1 and all that type of shit. I dont think anybody sucks at skiing, we just havent had as much time to learn how. Does the fact that I'm still learing how to ski or the fact that I still shit my pants whenever I start to lose control make me less of a "skier"? Should I hang up my Saga and TAF until I can cork 3 or do switch-ups or huck backies?
I think we've gotten really misconstrued in the idea that people "suck" when really we're just learning to progress. You were all there once.

You could be like my dudes over in Leadville where they buy vintage 80's North Face/O'Neill gear and shred their nuts off lookin like they just got done filming Hot Tub Time Machine...point is it doesnt matter. keep skiing.

The only gear that requires a certain skill level is touring gear ie guardians, mfd plates, dedicated top of the line ski bags with shovels and shit on it. Even then you don't need to be dropping massive cliffs, but you should be able to get down a black.

yesterday i saw two older rad ass dudes throwing down in just a shirt and jeans, and other kids decked in rasta and saga everything looking scared as hell.... dont matter at all

Here's the thing: eight or ten yeas ago, you could quickly tell who was a "good" freeskier by looking at the way they dressed and the skis they rode. Gapers rocked full-ear helmets and with fitting outerwear and directional skis. Racers wore racing suits. Old guys that ripped wore outerwear that was 10 years out of style. But if you saw a dude in the lift line that was rocking goggles under the helmet, baggy pants and twin tips, you knew that he at least was tossing cool 180s. And tossing cool 180s back then meant you were a rad skier.

Now everybody wears baggy pants and goggles under the helmet, and twin tips are so common that "twin tip skis" isn't even really a term anymore. But some skiers still associate looking cool with ability, even though the description of somebody with "ability" has changed from cool 180s to cool cork 7s. It's just one of the growing pains of a sport that has blown up a lot in the last 15 years.

It's always a little weird to see somebody who is riding skis that are way too advanced for them, but in terms of outerwear, wear whatever the hell you want. The only people who will care are the skiers who aren't tossing cool cork 7s.

dude i suck ass at skiing but still have a full saga suit, hestra gloves, eg2's, brand new skis, and full tilts. seriously, don't let anything people on the internet bum you out. it's all about having fun. and if you really can't take the butt hurt move out west and ski outside the park and remember what skiing is all about.
