One thing he said that is so fucking true. We waste all our talent on Football. Best athletes are wasted there. We would be unstoppable in Soccer and like every sport ever if we didn't have football.

that is true. he should of also pointed out how snubbed hockey gets in this country, when one of our most historic moments in the countrys history and sporting history, was the miracle on ice.

that's hilarious. Dutch coach did a great job.

I feel really really badly for US for having that dude representing them in the media. It's so sad that he brings up GDP to say that the US is a better country than the Netherlands.

They ask him to come on their show to say why the US didn't do so well, so he does just that, and then they start insulting his country and the sport he loves. He did a great job defending himself and making that dude look like a total piece of shit.

Yea we are no good in the Winter Olympics. We should be winning all the medals because just about everyone who does win medals trains in the US. That could be way off but I always hear the announcers saying they train in SLC, Colorado, etc. We've got the best facilities but our athletes are too busy playing Football.


I just want to win a world cup. Look at womens Soccer, no football or dominating sport and they are beast in Soccer. Gotta do a PSA to get young males to stop playing Football and start playing Soccer.

ya the utah olympic park is still used fully for training. i see athletes up there all the time in the summer.

Almost of your medals (11/25) are bronze. Almost half of Norway's (10/22) are gold. I'd say that's better.

I find it really sad that there was an ignorant member of CNBC during the broadcast saying stuff like 'Oh, you guys in the Netherlands have around like $700 Billion in your economy, we have like $16 Trillion! AMERICA IS BETTER THAN THE NETHERLANDS!!!!1!!!11!!' Screw that.

There was no need to bring up the economy in this interview, but then again, we would be better off without the NFL and football altogether. Besides, we should churn out more athletes that don't play football instead of putting them in the deathmatch that they call the NFL.

Medal counts are dumb. The way to do it is on a point system. 3 pts for gold, 2 pts for silver, 1 pt for bronze.

If you do that here are your standings for the top 5.

Canada - 51
Russia - 48
USA - 47
Norway - 46
Netherlands - 41

Why people hate America? Because the Dutch coach is a dick? Most of what he said didn't have anything to do with the question. Dude's a clown.

He's using his success as a stage to press his dislike, and then the reporters decided to argue with him and just highlight their ignorance as well.

I feel like an accurate measure should also be the number of sports a country participates in.

You see the US in damn near everything. Usually near the top too just not always getting medals.

This is like an American asking him where the Dutch hockey team is, or what happened to their Slopestyle competitors, or any other sport like that.

Really both sides of this just sound like idiots. The Dutch economy doesnt matter, and the fact that american football exists doesnt matter. This was supposed to be about speed skating, and it just turned into a piss contest.

To me total medal count is dumb. If a country won 15 bronze 2 silver and 0 gold I would say the country that won 10 gold 2 silver and 5 bronze did better.

And i think medal count at all is pretty stupid. I believe each even should be looked at as separate, its not like Team USA is really a team. Its just kind of our American way of trying to turn everything into a competition. No athelete competes to try to "boost the medal count", they compete to win gold in their individual event. For the most part, they could give 0 fucks about how many medals we win.

Natural human instinct is to blame failures on the situation, and successes on how personally good we are. I think it's called the self-serving bias for those who care. And yes I did learn this in high school psychology, and no I still can't spell psychology without spell check.

The rankings are based on gold medals. When two countries (or more) have an equal number of gold medals, it is based on silver, as you can see by looking at Russia, USA, and Germany. When two countries (or more) have an equal number of gold AND silver medals, it is based on bronze, as you can see by looking at Sweden and Austria, who are ranked 13 and 14, respectively.

Quoting for emphasis since everyone decided to ignore this. If people want to continue to hate on the U.S. then take all your fucking athletes out of your training facilities, and out of all our sports leagues and go play in your country for 4 years, then come back and we'll see who's talking. Oh wait, it's better to be here?... In my opinion its stupid when people say they're playing for their country and blah blah, but train in America. You're basically a product of American sports.

And while you're at it, get the out of our education system too. Probably half the staff was taught and trained here too.

uhm. I think you should probably look up some info about this.

Yes, athletes from other countries train in the US. US athletes also train in other countries.

But look at the top medal producing countries and you'll realize all the sports that those countries do the best in are sports that those athletes train at home in. Speed skating in the Netherlands, cross country skiing in Norway, hockey in Canada (this is a bit convoluted at the higher levels).

It's the countries that don't do well that don't have the proper facilities in their own countries that are the ones who primarily train in the US and other countries.


Also there are many many US athletes in skiing, boarding, hockey, and skating, etc who train in Canada at places like the Whistler during the summer or at the Calgary speed skating rink etc.


They're really not products of US sports. They go where the facilities are, and the US, having hosted more than one winter Olympics and being fairly easy to go to and train in, is a top destination simply because of the facilities.


Also what are you saying about being in the education system? Not understanding that.

While we are playing that game, how many of your coaches are from foreign countries? You definitely can't say they all American. Doesn't the US ski team train in South America and/or New Zealand in the off season?

I will be the first to admit the US has some phenomenal training facilities, great coaches and incredible opportunities for athletes, but don't act like it's the only place in the world athletes can be successful.

The american states it's boring watching speed skating go around a track for minutes at a time; yet thousands of Americans thoroughly enjoy watching NASCAR for hours at a time. His argument is no longer valid. He shouldn't have spoken on behalf of over a million people.
