I've been learning a lot about DIY car service and repair the past few years.
how do you keep cars running strong and prevent wear?

seeking just general common sense stuff

100k warrenty and I put 7k miles on it the first 12 months I owned it.

Yeah...still smells new .

Always keep maintenance records, always.

Regularly change your oil, figure out a good filter to use for your particular vehicle. It will affect things. This often means NOT the off the back shelf at NAPA.

Check your belts routinely (especially serpentine) and clean out your air filter. Also, monitor your fluid levels.

Keep a log of when major repairs are done and check their frequency against benchmarks for your vehicle, e.g.: spark plugs, brake pads, clutch.

Listen to your vehicle. Drive without the radio every now and then.

I routinely monitory my gas mileage -- often one of the first indicators something's awry.

All this should live in one/two folders, not scattered all over the house/garage/vehicle.

like said above listen to your car know how it sounds when that changes be worried, also when you have loss of power that is also bad, but really get to know your car do all your own work on it, i know every bolt on mine and know exactly what every noise is now, and everything said above

Just a little cosmetic tip, if ya don't already know how to fix up rust holes and shit its real easy, and all you need is some Bondo (available at your local Canadian-tire american equivalent) and sandpaper. Just mix the stuff, apply to busted areas liberally, sand smooth and spray some paint on thats hopefully the same color as your car.

i actually bondo'd both my rear quarter panels the other week

the salt and brine used in NY is brutal on the car. i have to replace pads and rotors all the time.

until 4 months later hte bondo cracks and the rust shows through again

rust is NOT easy, it's a cancer and like cancer in the human body unless you remove all of it, it's never gone. Bondo over a rusted area is similar to putting a band-aid over a bullet wound.

The only way to get rid of rust is to replaced the cancer'd metal with new metal
