Da fuck is wrong with them, can I get some of this money?
Facebook Inc. (FB), the world’s largest social network, agreed to acquire mobile-messaging application startup WhatsApp Inc. for $16 billion in cash and stock.
The deal also includes $3 billion more in restricted stock for WhatsApp’s founders and staff that will vest over four years, Menlo Park, California-based Facebook said today in a statement. More than 450 million people use WhatsApp, with 1 million new registered users being added daily, Facebook said.
WhatsApp competes with Snapchat Inc., which rebuffed a $3 billion offer from Facebook last year, as well as services from Twitter Inc. and Kik Interactive Inc. WhatsApp’s users can send messages through the service over the Web for free, as opposed to traditional text messages, which consumers pay for through their mobile-phone plans.
“WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people,” Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said in the statement. “The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable.”
thoughts?

$4 billion in cash and $12 billion in stock. FBs new messenger app didn't take off so they decided to buy their competition. Who knew texting was so valuable.

I feel like these messaging apps are getting a little pointless with all the other competition but thats just me and facebook is retarded now anyway, in my opinion of course, even though it's probably a stupid one

I like it better because my phone takes 40 seconds to load my texts, then another 20 to open up texts with a specific person, and sending photos takes forever, and that's if it's working. The app is basically instant compared to texting on my phone

it also rapes your battery and never turns off, deleting the fb and fb messenger apps off my phone was worth more than keeping them. although now that fb is buying whatsapp i foresee that app going the same way, which is unfortunate cause my gf and i use it daily.

It's a mobile messaging app that's definitely not worth $16 billion

Whatsapp has been great for years. I have scattered family/friends so I use it frequently. And you can text just through wifi.
If Mark Zuckerberg screws with the simplicity of that app and tries to plug it into Facebook... well that'll prolly be the last straw for me.
What tech n3rds are out there? Let's get together and create a chat network that operates ad-free, has zero social network plugins, can be encrypted for privacy, and is simply/easy to use. Then make millions off of annual subscription fees.

How they valued that company at $16 billion is beyond me. It's not even worth $100 million. If I owned Facebook stock, I would sell it immediately. What a completely boneheaded purchase.

= about how much they make every day

Not even close. They make $1 per user per year and have 450 million users. If every single user was paying for the service, they'd be making $450 million per year in revenue. However, they offer the first year free, so a large number of their users aren't currently paying anything. I would expect them to make $350-$400 million in revenue this year. Subtracting for costs, I'd estimate they make less than $1 million per day in profit. Facebook is going to have keep this company competitive for a very long time if they want to make this purchase worthwhile.

You can text any mobile number in the world for no charge.
It's just convenient I guess.

But it works over the Internet? Sounds like you still need to be in wifi range or 4g to send stuff? If that's the case then I can already send messages to anyone I want so what's the big deal?

How is it worth "$100 million" if they are making 1 million a day? Seriously... in 100 days they'll have the value of the company. It's obviously going to be more than $100 milion
