Have you heard of Joe Delaney? If not, you need to read this. And if you have, it’s time for the annual reminder of who he was and what he did, 31 years ago today.
Delaney, a Chiefs running back who had spent two years in the NFL as of June 29, 1983, noticed that a trio of young boys had waded into a man-made water hole. It contained an unknown deep end, and they quickly were in trouble.
As Frank Deford, then of Sports Illustrated, later explained it, “There were all sorts of people around, but only Joe dashed to the pond. There was a little boy there. ‘Can you swim?’ he asked Joe.
“‘I can’t swim good,’ Joe said, ‘but I’ve got to save those kids. If I don’t come up, get somebody.’ And he rushed into the water.”
Delaney saved one of the boys. Two drowned. Delaney drowned, too.
Joe Delaney died at the age of 24, with a wife and three young girls.
As a rookie in 1981, Delaney rushed for 1,121 yards. He sacrificed a bright future to help save three young strangers.
If you’ve got a spare 22 minutes, watch the documentary the Chiefs produced to honor a true hero and a true role model.
I rarely catch Bills games even though I'm in NY, but when I do this guy just pops out at you. It's sad to see a talented young player go down. Like the Bills or not, this kid was a talented football player, him and Kuechley are the front of the new wave of LB's that can change a game.

Bakerpowkind of, i mean he barely played last year
I think with the way the league is now putting more emphasis on defensive pass interference, the Seahawks will have difficulty playing with the same physicality they did last year. This will result in them needing more offense and Sidney Rice is the kind of player who can win a game.

the hawks will not change their game plan defensively, even if it results in more flags. the league wont make that drastic of a change either. half the game of football is the physicality, so i dont see the league making too many more changes. and idk sidney rice never really impressed me. regardless more offense is always needed, but i think there is a reason he retired. he would not have been able to give us the output we needed so either way he would have been a non factor. now we dont have to pay him to play for half a season.

The Seahawks may not, but the league wants offense. The league will do anything to achieve its goal of obtaining $25 billion in revenue. What is better to draw in viewers? Offense. Look at Fantasy Football, it is all about offense and the fan with Percy Harvin on his team is more apt to watch a Seahawks game if he knows that Percy has a good chance of gathering him the points to win his weekly game. Is it lame? Yes. Do I want to see defense? ABSOLUTELY. But the NFL does not. They want the revenue. While it may not seem like much in words, I am willing to be a hefty sum that we will see a LOT more defensive pass interference calls this year.
sick of lions fans freaking out about suh not being re-signed before camp. he'll sign for the long term cuz he really wants to see what this new coaching staff can do.
DevSo excited to see this kid rip shit up this year

Nah, all the buzz is about big fast hard hitting defensive players, Seattle is changing the way teams play. The league wants revenue yeah, but the trendy thing now is hard hitting physical defense. Airing it out is getting old, records don't mean crap anymore when they are getting broken every year. A majority of NFL fans (who generate most of revenue for the business, no?) would rather see a 10-3 knock down drag em out fight between bitter rivals as opposed to a 45-42 shootout..
That being said, I believe there will be more attention and subsequent flags on Seattle's secondary. They have always gotten away with stuff, but when you're the champ much more attention is on you. Sherman mugs people 15 yards off the line, grabs jersey and what not. Id love for Philly to go there in playoffs, Chip doesn't call plays in, it's all hand signals so therefore it eliminates the crowd noise in that aspect.

I am sorry, but I think you are wrong. You are looking at it from a fans perspective. Look at it from the point of view of someone who does not watch the NFL.
The NFL wants to draw in more viewers and there is no better way than offense. Imagine you are not a football fan, know very little about football, and generally do not watch it, but turn on the game. What would you rather watch, a team struggle to score or a team that is throwing up massive points in a back-and-forth game? The NFL would rather you see a high scoring game, hence the recent increase in protection to offensive players. As a result, they are promoting offense over defense.
The fans like you, me, and the rest of the threads posters will watch the games regardless of these changes. The NFL does not need to worry about earning more revenue from the current fans for they have almost reached the ceiling. They earn north of $9 billion a year with the current market. However, they want to earn $25 billion by 2027 and to do that they need to expand the fan base. You will not gain fans with low-scoring games, but you will gain them with high-scoring games.
Another aspect the NFL is trying to tap into is exploiting viewership from the fantasy market. Fantasy football is humungous and as some of you know, the most points are generated from offense. A viewer who plays fantasy football is more apt to watch a game if he has an offensive player (QB, RB, WR, TE, etc) who he knows will have a high chance of scoring.
Despite all of this, I too, would rather see a more defensive league as then we would see the true greats (P. Manning, Brady, Brees) separated from the pretenders (E. Manning, Rivers, Flacco, etc). Unfortunately, the NFL thinks more offensive play will attract new viewers and fail to realize it may push the older fans away.
I don't know, I work in a office that is I'd say 60-40 percent ratio female to male, most of those females not being NFL fans. That Monday after the Superbowl all they could talk about was the massive hits. They weren't talking about the great run after the catch by Kearse ( I think it was Kearse, might have been Baldwin, my memory is foggy) or any offensive plays. One girl could only talk about Chancellor's hit on Thomas on like the second play. Several people said they would watch if games were hard hitting like that, it's entertainment just as much as a 60 yard bomb.
I mean I get the point of view that a shootout is fun too, hell I'm an Eagles fan and that 7 TD game by Foles I was having the time of my life.
I think you're correct in saying that the NFL likes fast paced high scoring games now, BUT I feel alot of teams are going to try to replicate the Seattle D, so you'll see a swing to a more physical defense that will be the face of the NFL in 2-4 years. It's going from big WR's and TE's to 6-2, 6-3 safeties and corners that can knock the snot out of you.

I do agree with the assessment that the teams will try to trend towards the Seahawks model, but that is what every sport does, they model themselves after the winners. I just do not think it will be the most successful model this upcoming year. I think the Seahawks will have trouble replicating their success on defense and will need their offense to step it up.
Hopefully I am wrong about the way the NFL wants the league to trend and that defensive players will still be important.

Word, there's so much parity in the NFL it's hard to predict.
Preseason games are awful for any player who has a roster spot secured. It puts them at risk for injury in a game that holds no meaning. I personally think teams should scrap playing 1st team players in these games and instead hold joint practices where they do run throughs with first team against first team.
ford fields sold out for a preseason game tonight. lol wtf, save your money and wait till the regular season to be let down, guys. you're doing it wrong.
Lucky.johnny football created quite the ruckus with that preseason game
yeah, lots of hype for it. he played alright, not the best player of the game, though. he made some piss poor plays and needs to work on his craft a bit more. fun game, though. awesome pass by Moore at the end. can't wait to see more of him.

i mean what did you expect out of the guy, played exactly how a rookie of his talent should. made some plays and failed miserably. pretty good completions, 2 dropped on him. shoulda been something like 9/11 which is solid against a good secondary. definitely needs to know when the easy route is best. got close to being clobbered a few times for no reason.
im pumped for the season. I won't get to follow as much as i like since i live in germany now but it is a fair trade. Germany rocks.
got a pretty sweet little fantasy team. I like the shift in play from power house running backs to these incredible qb and receiver teams... so fun to watch. I don't mind a shoot out but i would rather watch a game thats is closer with like 3-4 touch downs.
I hate the pats and even I cringed when I saw Brady try to make that tackle. These games aren't even enjoyable it's too nerve racking just hoping your players survive
