Revelstoke or Red Mtn? Moving to BC but not sure where to go!

Just been issued IEC visas and we're heading to BC but not sure where to go.

We're thinking Revelstoke or Red Mtn (Rossland). Anyone know what Red's like vs Revelstoke now that they've put the new lift up Grey Mtn?

We want to get jobs that will allow us to apply for permanent residency maybe through BC PNP.

We spent a year in Whistler 06/07 but don't want to go back there because it's all seasonal work and too many people in the same boat.

What's the job situation like in Revelstoke vs Rossland/Trail???

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Revy is an awesome mountain and has a solid town. Also the mountain is almost 6000 ft of vert all the way around. Never been to Red though

Get in touch with him though. I'm pretty sure Drail is a Red Locale who has spent the last few years up Revy area. He's the guy you need to talk to.

Revelstoke homie! Best mountain I've ever skied. Also a lot of fun things to do at night. You could probably work at a restaurant or something.

I love red mountain, just heard stories of rev. Grey still needs some work and i think revs hill is larger so it might be better for you depending on what you want, but red is a really great hill, especially skiing the Paradise side and park.

I'm currently living in Nelson skiing Whitewater (about an hour from Rossland) and I have heard absolutely nothing good about Red so far this season - normally its supposed to be amazing but apparently they didnt clean the brush off of any of the runs in the summer when they were spending their time cutting the trees off the new run and so you're skiing through bushes most of the time. They've also been getting about half as much snow as Whitewater or Revy. Based on this winter alone, I would say Revy.... unless someone who's actually skiing Red this season can offer something different, but everyone I've talked to that's been there this season has said it was real bad.

Yeah! It's really beautiful in BC and either in Revelstoke or Red Mountain, you can surely do good. Better try the two first and decide which would you prefer most.

Yeah, red has gotten no love as far as snow this year, but at least they have been open unlike a lot of the coastal bc resorts/Washington. And they are doing better than Tahoe. They typically get less snow than everywhere else in the kootenays, but on average they get enough, usually finishing the season with a 3m base. This has been a bad year for most of western North America - not sure if it's fair to judge anywhere based on this season alone.

as far as ive heard red opens half way through the season consistently and closes 2-3 weeks early.

id stick with rev, rev is a great mountian and the community is really great too, also the expanding rev is gonna bring more money and jobs into town.

Seems like most people are recommending Revy. I just wasted two hours watching vids of some horrifically deep RMR pow.

Wish there were more lifts though.

I think the one key thing people are missing here is that you are looking for a career-type job rather than a ski bum job. I seriously doubt you'll be able to get permanent residency bussing tables a couple of nights a week.

Once you factor that into the equation I think you may be better off looking into Trail. Revelstoke may have the better skiing but everything I have heard suggests that employment-wise it can be hard.

Yeh I am wary of this. We're also looking a bigger towns a short drive from ski resorts. Such as Vernon or Salmon Arm. Would prefer to live in a real ski town though.

Revy is sick, but Red has some awesome terrain as well. I think Revy has more or a nightlife, but Red had some good parties when I was there. Also Revelstoke is kind of in the middle of everything. Rogers Pass is like 45 minutes away, Calgary is like 4.5 hours. And Revelstoke has a longer season.

They literally finished Grey a few weeks before the season really got started and because of such tight timing, they were unable to clear the brush. I talked to a patroller though while I was there and he said they plan on clearing it out this coming summer.

It was a great mountain, but I feel like a few hours north would be infinitely better in regards to options beyond Red. But the town itself felt wicked cool. Mountain had a very local vibe.

no. whitwater is already full of fucking beginners riding terrain they cant handle, Plus Nelson has a huge job shortage.

If you call early December 'halfway through the season'. And 2-3 weeks early? early April isn't really that early of a close. They usually close a week before Whitewater and two weeks before the rest of the Kootenays, and yeah, they usually close with the best conditions of the season, but it's not like they are closing 'early' as you say. They close when they intend to close.


I think Red's latest opening day was December 10th, but on average it's the first week of December and they are open until the first (or second) weekend of April usually.

Yeah what i meant to say was that skiing paradise is always a good time, and being a sub-average park skier i enjoy their park a lot this year. Snow has been scarce though
