One of our riders had an idea about electric winch for skiing and decided to contact ABB. They were interested about the idea and they sent us a frequency converter and a electric motor. They cost pretty much so we were lucky to get them free. The winch works great now and the top speed is more than 70kmh so no more speed issues. The best thing about it is that you can change settings of frequency converter so you don't have to always go full speed and you can tune acceleration times etc. Power for winch comes from 6kW genarator and that's the only big minus when you have to take so much stuff to spot with you. But yea check our video about the winch if you're interested about it.
Ask more about it if you want to know and I'll try to answer.
Has anybody ever considered charging some sort of capacitor or capacitor/inductor type combo to achieve the same effect? I suppose that would be one hell of a capacitor and the recharge would be annoying.
This is pretty damn wicked! Always thought an electric powered winch with a gas generator would be superior to a gas only counterpart. Noise being one of the larger factors.
And on another note, has anyone tried rigging the handle of the winch up with a trigger so the skier can control it? I think it would be super easy to dissemble like a Traxxas remote or something and re-arrange the layout so it fits into a tight, nerfed package in the root of the handle. Then rig up a receiver to the speed control shouldn't be crazy hard either, just some basic electrical work. That would be the ultimate setup.
Really though what you have now with a control that can be at a distance from the actual winch is really good in itself. Can't wait to see the shots powered by this thing!
Our winch builder said that it could be possible to do an winch controlling app for a smartphone. That would be sick! But at the moment we just use the original remote because it's good enough as you said. And thanks for feedback!
