What to do in Amsterdam other than red light district and coffee shops?
came here to post this. I never got to wander Amsterdam farther than inside the airport for a layover, but a friend of mine had nothing but good things to say about the Heineken tour.
Anne frank house is totally worth the trip, the FOAM museum (modern art), I fell in love at the Van Gogh museum .. His work is truly remarkable. Rijks Museum was expensive but I'd imagine it's more worth it now than when I was there, as it was mostly closed then. Don't go to the bulldog cafes to get high, there are way nicer places. Vondel park with a couple of beers and a j ... Super beautiful at sunset. It felt like I was in a painting there, a very romantic spot ;)
Rent bikes for sure. Best way to see the city. I really enjoyed riding around without looking at a map and just seeing where the streets took me. Museums are cool and all but there is so much to see outside confined spaces.
Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, Van Gogh Museum are all worth visiting. If you like photography, I'd recommend FoAm, as well as House Marseille, which I personally like better.
All 5 are top-notch musea if that's what you're in to.
Red light district is fun for 30 mins tops, as is chilling in a coffee shop.
Renting a bike is the best and cheapest way to get around, as well as fun and definitely the most Dutch thing in the world, but for Gods sake, don't be a fucking tourist and cycle on the side-walks, in the middle of the road or like a complete retard (tourists are the best at this).
Canal tours are quite touristy, but the perspective from the canals is really nice.
Depending on the time you're going, there's probably some sick festivals and parties going on. What time are you planning on going?
Chilling/BBQ'ing in the Vondelpark on any given spring/summer evening is also really nice, but probably not that much different from any other city.
Anne Frank house is special, but expect qeues up to a couple of hours. It's CRAZY in the spring/summer time.
