Replying to Buying an all mountain ski. Advice…?
Heya everyone!
To most of you I'd currently probably count as a gaper ;), still, would be cool if you had some advice for me.
After a few (*cough*) years' break from skiing I started going on skiing vacations again two winters ago (finally…!) – but consequently I'm currently not the most technically brilliant skier. Even so, I'd like to get my own pair of skis again instead of renting every time.
All in all, despite what I wrote above, I don't think I'm necessarily that bad a skier either, more of an intermediate; I ski down most black pistes (European system…) without a problem, carved or in parallel turns where carving gets a little too fast for my taste. On the other hand, I do rely on force/strength instead of proper technique more often than I should when it's getting tight or when I'm getting tired or insecure. I'm also still very cautious off-piste, maybe more than I should…
For the foreseeable future, all my skiing will happen in the alps, Austria in most cases. The skis will probably be mostly used on groomers, but I plan to go onto ungroomed terrain with my friends at least somewhat regularly once I regain a little more skill and trust in my abilities. I'd also like my skis to be able to handle going switch now and then and stuff, so twin tips would be nice. I don't have any bigger park ambitions though (although I love watching it, I don't think with the amount of days I'm able to go skiing every year I'll be able to master more than the basic stuff… ever :P).
Physically, I'm 6'0 (1,83m), and a bout 240lb (110kg) – I'm doing weight training and have a bit of a belly, so there's that :P I guess that means I'll need a little stiffer skis to not overpower them.
I did look around a little and read some reviews, and I currently think a 178 Armada ArvTi might be the right ski for me, or maybe an Armada TST or Line Prophet 98…?
I know I could also look into the 188 variants, but I'm a little bit wary about the turning radius. On my last vacation a few weeks ago, from the skis I got what worked best for me was a 178 Dynastar Outland 80 Pro that I skied for a few days, which is advertised with a 15m turn radius. The other ones I tried (Race Carver mostly, with 19-21m radii and unrockered) felt just too sluggish and lazy in quick turns in comparison.
Sure, I could just get that Dynastar now, but of course that's not a twin tip and a little narrow for what I'd want to have.
Soo… does anyone of you have any advice for me? Any other suggestions than the skis I found? Or am I perhaps totally on the wrong track with what I picked?
Thanks!
