Premiere Pro to DaVinci Resolve and back

I've decided its impossible (especially with torrented version of PP) and gone with this fix:

-Finish all cuts in PP. REMOVE ANY DISSOLVES (haven't figured out a fix for this yet).
-Export uncrompressed.
-Import into Resolve and use Scene Detect to re-chop edit into clips. This WILL NOT work for dissolves, which is why you have to remove them earlier.
-Color.
-Export from Resolve.
-Import into Premiere!

Just take the premiere file and export it as an XML file then import the XML into resolve and you should be able to send it back and fourth with ease.

Have you considered using speed grade instead of resolve? I know it's not as good of a program but it is a decent color correction tool and it integrates pretty much seemlessly with pp.

That'll only work part of the time. If you do any time remapping, titling, or other effects it won't transfer over to resolve.

One option is once you've locked your edit in to export a ProRes file or a DNxHD from premiere, import it into resolve. Then use scene detect to break it into individual clips to grade. Then render it out and go back to premiere/after effects to do your titles.

I think this is essentially what I suggested. Same issue with fades, ya?

Worst case scenario try the Scene Detect option in Resolve it will cut up your clips from your full export .

Agreeing with mvf and Michael_T.

Little known fact - Premiere exports FCP4 XMLs, so any functionality that Final Cut added into version 5 of their XML code isn't possible with Premiere. This is one reason why speed ramps, keyframes and effects don't transfer very well.

I find it easiest to remove transitions, titles, etc in Premiere and export a "for color" version of the video. Then import that video back into Premiere, and use Premiere to cut up the video instead of using Resolve's scene detect. (Just highlight the tracks with cut video, and press down, ctrl+K, down, ctrl+K, down, ctrl+K, repeat, repeat... or you can also make an automated macro to do this for you.) Scene detect in Resolve usually isn't accurate enough to make it worth the time for me.

Then delete all the media from the timeline except the chopped-up "for color" video, and export an XML.

Then open Resolve, import the XML, select the "for color" video, grade the video and export the colored file. Bring that file back into Premiere, add back transitions, overlays, etc, and you're done.



I've done the "export XML from Premiere and link to the raw media in Resolve" method a few times, but it just doesn't work well if there are any ramps or effects due to the FCP4 XML limitation.
