I'm borrowing a t2i with an 18-55 kit lens, anything to know?

My schools loaning me a t2i to take some landscape pictures on my travels over break this week. I've really only shot film and a bit on a nikon d3100. Is there anything I should know for landscapes and a bit of videography? General tips and tricks?

Youtube tutorials are your friend. Google/Youtube your question, check out the video, go from there.

I knew nothing about cameras and learned from tutorials and trial and error.

Have a class 10 SD card, it makes a difference for some reason.
Use manual focus for video.
Otherwise there's no huge difference between dslr's and film i think

Set it up like so.

Camera on "P" mode (turn the knob to the P)
Set the ISO to 400
Make sure the Image Stabilization on the lens is on.



Then go out and shoot photos. Don't worry about anything but composition. You're bound to get some good photos.

Always shoot manual (look up tutorials on shutter speed, iso and aperture)... for everything. Photo and video. Always use manual focus. Class 10 card,

For video, yea, but for photography? fuck no.

I'd fucking hate using a T2i in M mode... and with a slow lens it's even more retarded - and manual focus with a kit lens? haha. Why? Set it at f8 and you will nail focus all day long.

Dude autofocus sucks ass, there's nothing more annoying than pressing the shutter button half way down a thousand times because the camera focuses on a stupid fence pole or something instead of the subject. For videography you should never use af, it will randomly blur the video because of any slight movement. Mf is the way to go

Or cameras with a dedicated AF-on button. I set mine (60D) up to autofocus only when I press that button rather than half press the shutter, took a while to get used to but I can't change back now.

Yeah, because manually focusing using a tiny ass viewfinder is oh so easy. Learn to use your tool, and you'll know how to focus on your subject better - using AF.

...and I'm mostly addressing photography. With video? - duh you want all manual settings there.




...and let me elaborate there too.

set to 1080/24p Set shutter speed to 50. Set ISO to auto (honestly, for beginners, this is just way easier to do than constantly adjusting aperture manually using an EF lens) Use manual focus and... I don't know about the rest of the folks in here, but I personally never use IS during video.

If you want to shoot 720/60 (only use this if you plan on learning how to edit slow-mo things), then set shutter speed to 120 (shutter speed should always be about double your framerate)
