Yeah, because manually focusing using a tiny ass viewfinder is oh so easy. Learn to use your tool, and you'll know how to focus on your subject better - using AF.
...and I'm mostly addressing photography. With video? - duh you want all manual settings there.

set to 1080/24p Set shutter speed to 50. Set ISO to auto (honestly, for beginners, this is just way easier to do than constantly adjusting aperture manually using an EF lens) Use manual focus and... I don't know about the rest of the folks in here, but I personally never use IS during video.
If you want to shoot 720/60 (only use this if you plan on learning how to edit slow-mo things), then set shutter speed to 120 (shutter speed should always be about double your framerate)
