I still think he has very robotic style - which I'm not fully crazy about - but god dammit can that guy execute a fucking trick flawlessly.

I give respect where its due, and his athletic prowess is incredible.

So well done Mr. Goepper, I salute you.

that being said, geoppers run was super impressive, but I'm still a huge fan of Joss' run. shit was nuts and I also preferred his style in the rail section to geoppers

he kills it in comp. but there is a difference between comp skiers and movie skiers. i prefer more style. to me dub and triple corks with high mute has just become so boring to see on tv. still he is an extremely talented skier

I am over it, actually though. I have no place being the pole police. Candide got called out on Skipass.com by Julien Regnier for saying pretty much the same thing and that kinda resonated with me.

Andy Parry's post in this thread was the realest out. Goepper and these dudes are heroes now, especially in the USA, if it is anything like when Moseley won gold in Nagano when I was a kid. It is pretty fuckin amazing to have someone coming out of obscurity in the midwest representing here, and no doubt good for skiing.

He only did one mute, but it was mute to dub japan. on a triple. You're obviously entitled to your own opinion, but the whole high mute argument does not work for this.

Can you even do this? ANY cork with high mute? The general public and myself love the look of a good high mute compared to a wacked out safety any day.
Plus, as stated above, Nick only did one high mute, for the first 2 rotations of a trip, leading into a dub japan for the last cork.

It's exactly like Mosely in 98. It's completely cyclical for me. After that and the dinner roll in 02 there were big surges, and I'm expecting a really big one after this one, especially with how much publicity these dudes are getting now.

IMO no poles might as well be cheating. I'd put money on him struggling with the scream grab with no poles and most definitely doing a triple with changing the grab going into flip 3. Theres a whole lot more to get caught up on with poles. He can grab with his entire hand vs a couple fingers.

tru dat, also y the hype on his dual grab, with poles there's no way he could do it. no credit to his no pole dual grabs, respect goes to vinnie cash for doing impossible grabs/the ginnie WIT POLES.

also who woulda thought a few years back that a kid with 0 movie segments, 0 recognision in the sport apart from comps, with robotic 'steez' would be the face of our sport in'a media'z public view. Quoting s.STEPT; shit's gay...

how about the rest of the course, the way you ski iinto features and the way you land, add some swag rather than having it look so forced and stock. i like to watch tricks with different rotations, not ssx tricky shit. i hated that game. its ok just my opinion, anywayyyyy #4bi92014

The argument about different judging panels, although they are defined as a "FIS" or "AFP" panel is obsolete, they're all AFP judges that are just working at a FIS contest. The panel that judged x games had 4 out of the 6 judges that are also judging in Sochi on it.
Enjoy the skiing we all got to see on one of the biggest courses ever. Maybe it's not your favorite kind of skiing but appreciate it for what it is, and watch some hockey!

It just blows my mind how people will go so far out of their way to create a reason to not like someone who is fucking awesome.

I get that we're all aficionados of style and grace but for fuck's sake... The guy has to kill it in the Olympics just to get even a passive approval from the community at large and that is pretty much bullshit IMO. If Tom had done the same run you'd be fucking exploding with joy.


I think it's good that even for all the "Fuck the Olympics" & "I hate no poles" etc. shit that has bubbled up over the past few months, there sure are a lot of people starting to "come around" to him as you said... But even still- it's a "Yeah that was pretty sick I guess but I would have preferred so-and-so's style" when the aforementioned so-and-so is sitting on their couch sans medal because they couldn't consistently wrap their immense sense of style around a comp winning run when it comes right down to it.

I guess I just feel kind of bad for the guy. I feel like he's the really nice but really nerdy super athlete that nobody wants to let sit at their lunch table because he's not cool enough and that just seems way too middle school to me. The guy is doing his thing and damn well at that, obviously. I never understood the vitriol towards him, from the original futures pins bullshit to, well- this right now.


Nothing against you or anybody else who feels that way as everyone is entitled to their opinion, it's just an observation I've made that I have been kind of holding onto and I don't really think it's fair to him. Dude has worked so hard, he deserves more than "Yeah I guess he's ok now" IMO.

Agreed, that dub grabbed trip was unreal. I couldn't believe it when I saw it.

On another note, I'm so sick of this no poles argument too. Who really gives a fuck? It's not 2006 anymore. Guys have been riding with no poles forever. Think about the OG line crew (Pollard, Mike Nick, Mithoefer & Manley) and so many of our other favorite riders--Phil Belan, Larose, Henrik, Wallisch, B Dog, P White, Downey and many, many more--have rode without poles at one point or another.

Clearly Goepper's doing it with a bit different, some might say "comp style", but that doesn't change a thing. Obviously since it's a major comp its going to garner greater discussion and polarize people a hell of a lot more than skiing in a segment or edit with no poles. It's such bullshit hypocrisy though, people bitching about one dude skiing with no poles and liking others. Just say you don't like his style instead of this cop-out argument. It seems like so many people are bitching because they were concerned about how skiing was portrayed to the general public or worried about comparisons to roller blading. Get over it.

I get that people think Nick's style is robotic but you cannot deny he's absolutely on fire right now. People, myself included, said the same shit about Jon O when he was competing, he was just so dialed in. Goepper slayed at X and the Olympics. Plus, he's tall as fuck, it isn't easy to make it look smooth and he does.

Style is subjective, we will always favor one persons style over another. It's gotta be one of the hardest parts about judging. It would suck to be a judge, no matter what the outcome, someone's going to hate you. I hope people like Raf keep judging because he really holds it down in the style department (based on his posts it seems like he might be kind of over it).
