I still think he has very robotic style - which I'm not fully crazy about - but god dammit can that guy execute a fucking trick flawlessly.

I give respect where its due, and his athletic prowess is incredible.

So well done Mr. Goepper, I salute you.

Completely agree. He does literally every trick as perfectly as it could be executed... as correctly as it could possibly be done. Textbook. His skill is undeniable. however it's just not as appealing visually to me. I like the little nuances of others' tricks. Maybe it's because I can't relate to doing tricks perfectly haha.

I'm still with you on that. He has a very contest-centric style which is incredibly robotic. However his execution is just fucking insane. I feel like since he's polished it up a bit I just can't help but respect how perfect it is.

I'd still watch Max Hill zero shifties all day long over it, but I dunno... I guess I just respect the skiing or something.

I gotta say his rail section in finals was some really dope shit, definitely the most tech and had some pretty damn good style. I really liked Joss's, particularly the revert before the cannon, but yea, Goepper killed it.

The real question is: who is golden boy post olympics? Despite taken second I think it might be Gus...

You know what? I think it's more that Goepper came around on us.

I don't buy that robot steeze thing anymore. He heard the criticism and he adjusted. He's MUCH better than he used to be. Is he Delorme? Fuck no, he's not Wallisch, either. But he's much, much smoother than he used to be and much more idiosyncratic in the way he skis. He's sort of carved out a style that is competition-focused, but nonetheless unique.

People need to recognize that when you're that goddamn GOOD, you can probably figure out a way to do your tricks more smoothly rather than focusing on squeezing in an extra 180. Nick has done that and deserves props for it.

And you can count me among the people who think his "bronze" run was the best slope run in the history of the sport.

has anyone else done double corks with opp blunts? i think i remember paul bergeron doing one but those are the best parts of geoppers runs.

Nick is so much fun to watch on a slope course, he literally picks it apart. I almost prefer watching him live in comparison to slowed down, edited segments because it doesn't really show how consistent he really is. He threw that double grab genie so well every time in Sochi, it didn't even look hard for him.

Think Freeskier will have him in the running for Skier of the Year in 2014?

Nick took what opportunities he had ran with them faster then Apolo Ohno can skate. Now your just coming around? He has classic American rags* to riches story that should have always trumped what you think about his "robot style". But then again everyone is entitled to hate.

Pumped to see him go from a really small resort that no one knows about to the main stage at the Olympics.

*Rags for skiing. Meaning not from a world class resort with extremely wealthy family.

I'm a pretty hardcore style vs. tech guy, so I'm not a fan of all the whirly bird shit that happens in skiing. I've always campaigned against it. I even still don't love it, and wish there was way more focus on creativity like what you guys do. Style and creativity are what skiing is all about.

However, I just feel compelled to give credit where its due. Even most contest skiers don't ski like he does.

Well at this point I think we've all seen his runs.

But you and JD are right, he has improved his style immensely from the days of his robotic comp flow where it very much looked like he was linking trampoline tricks together on a slope course. And he deserved an Olympic medal. I just wish he hadn't punctuated his skiing without poles- it looks like aerials and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But it's all personal preference, and that's just my take on why I have not yet 'come around' on Nick Goepper.

I'm all about no poles. I think that was almost part of it for me... the no poles thing almost made his style his own thing. It was like he took the slightly lame move yet it made him more awesome.

He's done a great job at not giving a fuck in the face of a lot of criticism.

I completely agree. I don't think he has robot steeze at all. Honestly, would somebody with "robot steeze" do a switch double cork 9 screamin semen? I don't think so. And I'm willing to bet if somebody saw that in a movie, not knowing it was Goepper, they would jizz their pants.

He also did a triple cork mute to double japan (I think that was what it was, I couldn't entirely tell). Pretty rad if you ask me.

He has put out some pretty cool edits too. I wouldn't describe his style as robotic, I'd describe his style as clean. The kid slays.

I'm on the bandwagon. His runs overall were smoother (if not necessarily more stylish, I think that goes to Harlaut) than anyone else's (even Harlaut who bobbled on a couple tricks). His grabs were by far the best looking mid-rotation etc., his jib sections were flawless and actually pretty unique from what other guys were doing during the comp.

I think he deserved the gold on the day.

The way he skis is just the way he skis, its not really his fault. I just think it's sick that he came from the most unlikely background and made it this far. He seems like he is truly in it for the love of the sport, which is more than can be said for a lot of people out there. Anyone with that attitude deserves respect, no matter how robot-eske his tricks may look.

Good points Doug. And ya know, I've never really had a problem with it previously. It could be an Olympic image thing for me, like we needed to differentiate ourselves from snowboarding, from aerial gymnastics.

I do not agree with this.

How can we claim that we hate FIS for trying to put rules on skiing and then turn around and tell people what they can and can't wear/hold? Thats rediculous. It should be a completely personal choice.

I've always hated on him but i gotta say he is probably the best comp skier out there. He's got game on rails and jumps all 4 and 8 ways. He deserved to win olympics too in my mind

gotta say, his triple with the 2 grabs was fuckin insane. There was one slo mo angle of it that looked so sick. his consistency blows my mind.

Did anyone notice Joss was the only dude the whole time to do a 270 pretz 270? thought that was kinda interesting

Its just so effortless. That is what I think he got dialed, his landings are like he never took off and his style is calculated.

Still flippy/spinny madness, and I'd prefer Jossi's run or a couple of Max Hill under 540 rotations... but for a contest where madness wins that was epic.

He's still not a skier Id like to watch in movies/edits but he's become one of my favorites to watch compete in slope. He lands everything so clean and the fact that he mixes it up with screaming seamen grabs makes him so much more fun to watch, and I think the fact that he has a bit more of a "robotic" style than allot of the other guys just makes him more unique and more fun to watch for me at least.
And that he still goes no poles even tho so many people hate on it just makes me respect him even more.
How his run didn't get a better score I can not understand, would like to see where the judges took away points from his run.

It kills me that that asshole got to fly to Sochi, attend the olympics, and was paid what is probably a pretty good amount of money yet he can be so absolutely terrible at his job.

Agree with Mr. Bishop. Run of the day. And on the no poles issue, an athlete would be an IDIOT to change something that is working for him/her at a huge event like this. Nick was forced by injury to give up his poles. He trained without them, learned/stomped triples without them. Why would he even consider going back to using poles in the Olympics? Props to all the slope guys. Hell of a show. America's falling in love with this sport & these athletes.
