There's precedent for this, the Norwegian army did it first:

In the years between 1300 and 1800, the soldiers of Norway, Sweden, Russia and Finland put on skis during the winter
months for military missions. The Norwegians had over 1,500 ski troops by the year 1776 and had written the first ski
instruction book. In 1767, the first military ski competition was held in Norway. The meet consisted of four events:
shooting while skiing at full speed down a hill; skiing through a deep wooded section; skiing down steep hills without
poles; and a cross country run with a pack and rifle. This was the first formal separation of alpine and cross country
skiing.
