Line Freedom plate....crap

thats kinda crappy that the line binding can just be screwed nto other skis (drill the quickmounts in at a shop). i was watching the line bindings videos and when the reactor is mounted on a freedom plate its is probably about 5cm-ish off the base of the ski. thats a LOT of lift if you ask me

5cm isn't very tall at all. While im sure everyone afraid of even reading the word racing, I will say that the fis regulation height is 55mm for guys... most carving skis come with much taller lifters/plates. 5cm doesn't look to tall at all.

FIS is 55 mm...but thats not riser...thats from bottom of ski to bottom of boot. A credit card from top to bottom is this height. In order for a Line Plate to pass FIS Reg's, the ski must me .5 cm thick...not happening.


My take on the Line binding setup is this. Its an awesome concept, but Line did it wrong with trying to mkae the seup exclusive to them...too heavy, too not compatable, and just to damn expensive.

Just incase theres someone out there who begs to differ, this was taken off the line website.

FREEDOM PLATE
Any ski with a flat top surface can now be upgraded for Quickmount compatibility. A certified Line shop technician simply wood screw mounts the Freedom plate to the ski and you gain the unlimited freedom to mount and interchange your Reactor binding between all of your skis. Adds only an additional 7mm of height and weighs only 7 ounces (1/2 pair).

Ohhh forgot to add,

1cm is 10mm... so it's 0.7cm's tall, or for thoes american's, 0.028in.

They're not trying to make the setup exclusive to Line. No other company is making their skis with inserts right now. But they should be. Look at the snowboard industry.

I just called Line cuz it was bothering me, and then checked the site after.

The freedom plate adds 1/2 an inch of lift according to Line Customer Service and 7mm according to their website.

Group that in with 1 cm lift on the binding's huge metal plate, and the lips under the heel and toe and you are probably looking at around 20mm of lift off the skis top sheet. Throw in 15mm for ski thickness, you are looking at 35mm off the snow.

Just an FYI, the highest lifter currently out there is on the Atomic GS9 ski...57mm so while FIS allows 55, no one uses all of it. I have 37 on my slalom skis.

Yea, I just reread the first post, I misread it before.

The pictures I had seen of the plate looked like it was higher than it actually is. I was guessing it to be around 1.5cm.

Regardless, this is my stance after skiing the reactor. It doesnt ski anything but park well...No carving, no pop at the end of a turn, and all that torque being transmitted to 4 screws (where all other bindings out there use 8). I dont trust it.

1) i have no beefs with Line or their binding

2) i WATCHED the binding video. i didnt bust out the ruler so the messurement wasnt exact (5cm)

3) I am not against racing, i just wanted to point out the unusally high lift that the combo plate/binding adds to non-Line freeride skis

all the weight is right at your feet so you dont really notice it, and when your skiing you dont notice the rise at all. the only thing im getting super fed up with is the brakes, horrible, gone through two pairs already.

to those asking how you break brakes... I have a bit of experiance with this (6 totalled brakes last season , many other damaged and hacked back togather). If you happen to have a ski come off while riding or landing switch, the brake will catch and just torque itself right off. Every one I broke was from landing switch at pretty high speeds and fucking up in the process... landing switch poorly, ski comes off, brake goes to magical broken brake land.

I have used the line bindings and have worked on them in my shop and this is my take on it all:

a)too heavy... the compitition blows them out of the water based off weight
b) inconsistant torque testing - when i torque test them, i get all kinds of inconsistant results. granted, it is difficult to test with their wierd release system, but #1 priority for me in a binding is consistancy. i want my binding to release exactly the same every time so i can trust them and know what to expect at all times.
c) i come from a racing background and i wouldn't want anywhere NEAR that much lift on my skis... even if i was a pure carver.
d)the rivets are a cool idea in concept, but there are some downsides such as fucking up the flex pattern of the ski. A big problem i found was that chatter was MUCH MUCH more prevalent as was instabity when the bindings were attached with the pre-drilled line holes. its my beleif that having the only mounting points so close togather allows the ski to be too flexible, and it causes you to have a loss of sensitivity/finesse control. its like skiing on a wobbly-ass 2x4.

so in conclusion... i think line has potential with their product, but it sucks total ass at the moment. I suggest everyone use salomon s912ti or look p12 bindings. they are the lightest and most consistant bindings i have ever dealt with both in the shop, and on the snow.

the other thing with the plate...is that it takes away some of the affect when its not on a line ski...the tech doesnt work as well...thats what the guy at my shop told me...because of the height of the ski...and the elimination of the 4 holes...the releases get messed up

i say good idea, but unless they use ti and harder plastics, and jack the pirce up in the process, i wont buy them anymore. too heavy, easy ot break, too many moveing parts, and 10 ft tall.
when i was 2 my parents put me on a pair of sticks.....i have been running wild ever since.

skisf4x4, I was wondering what line skis you used with the reactors that made it unstable feeling? I was thinking of getting the R12. Wish I can demo them but not avail. in my neck of the woods. For your torque testing which provided the most inconsistent reads forward or backward release? I know both are important, just curious if one was worse than the other. Thanks.

i used the bindings/plate with 1260s and darksides. I mounted both with normal bindings after using the lines for a few days. There was a vast improvement on both skis with 'traditional' bindings on them. I actually really enjoyed the darksides. The 1260s were way too short, which only compounded the problem.

I got the inconsistant test results by basically doing the twist test backwards on the ski, as well as doing a standard heel release test. like i said... it was hard to test these things cause they are so different than normal bindings, but i never got them to be consistant regardless of the test i did. the closest i got them to releasing the same every time was ~10 n/m... ten may not sound like much, but thats a hell of alot more than any other binding i test. (most the major companies are usually within 2-3)

Just sold mounted and tested my first line binding this season. R10 on a 1260. I also got really jumpy heel release release results. That and it was never a smooth release in the toe...the elastic travel on these toe pieces bites.

to the guy who works on the line bindings. my shop's been getting consistent results on them. they actually ran it a few times because they'd never seen the lines before.

and the chatter, bullshit. my reactors on a pair of darksides don't chatter at all, unless it's SUPER chunky AND icy.

the chatter/instability is not bullshit. i come from a racing background and ski alot in the midwest (read: icy, chunky, shitty conditions). The chatter on the darksides wasn't bad, and prettymuch went totally away with normal bindings mounted on them. the 1260s chattered like it was their job with or without the reactors, but it was noticably worse with the line bindings. Again, i am 6'3' so 164cm skis are crazy short for me and that certainly didn't help their case.

whoever said lines release as smoothly as your looks: me and the other guy from a shop both tested these things using torque testing devices in the shop.... i think your talking about the way they feel on the snow. both are obviously important, but i think our method is a bit more scienctific and less subjective. for what its worth, i'm not sure i ever got the bindings to release on the hill... and i tried.

skisf...I was talking about how they released while I was skiing and sure your experiment may be more scientific...I just meant by feel....mine release 4 times last saturday, 2 of them were heel releases...and they FELT smooth...mine dine is set at 8 and I have nothing but good things to say about the reactors during my SKIING EXPERIENCE...also if you take a pair of reactors with boots hooked into the binding you can manually twist the boot out and feel how smooth they are...at least mine

i have the plates on a pair of mad trixs and arv's I don't see what the fuck everyones problem is. They ride amazing and I don't notice shit when skiing. And I actually find the lift to be nice. I think it makes carving easier, but maybe I am crazy. I like 'em.

don't knock them till you've tried them.

gretch... thats what i was saying. i have alot of in shop fiddling with them, but only 10-12 days of on snow with them. i am very happy they work well for you, and i sincerely hope line bindings work alot better for everyone outside of the shop then they do IN the shop.

I got the first pair of line bindings, skied them for a season, got different bindings. Then this year im back on them, because i got a free pair, they seem way more solid and way less shitty than the first year's. Im gonna stick with them and see how they work out. My problem was never how they released, but how you couldn't step into them and they were flimsy. so i'll be stoked if the problems are fixed.
