How the FUCK can ”Ski for Sarah”-stickers get banned in the Olympics?

Firstly, to represent my country and share with the world the sport which has blessed my life with beauty and joy. I am also here to honor my great friend Sarah Burke who left this world two years ago. I ride with a Sarah sticker on my snowboard and helmet always. The IOC however, consider Sarah stickers "a political statement" and have banned them. WOW. Sarah is a beautiful, talented, powerful women, who's spirit inspires me still. She is a big reason why skier pipe/slope are now Olympic events.”

Now. exactly when did honoring one of the sports greatest and a huge contributor to getting a new, exciting sport into the Olympics turn into politics? This is utterly, utterly disgusting.

So, from the deepest depth of my heart: Fuck you IOC! Fuck you very, very much.

And while I'm at it – even though I'm wishing my friends who are there to compete all the luck and even though I'd like the world to see some sick skiing in slope, pipe and moguls – fuck the Olympics!

This is exactly the kind of ignorant, high-cholesterol, mafia-like behavior from the International Olympic Committee that will, now and in the long run, make freeskiing less free.

Wow thats messed up. It cant be a political statement when there is nothing political about it. If someone wore an LBGT sticker or something with all the press on about that issue then I would understand the need to censor it but this? Give me a break.

IOC is a gang of old cunts who mostly do as they please, and they'd probably kick out everyone who rides with that sticker just to make a point.

Before everybody gets too reactionary- Trennon Paynter just addressed this:

"they never "banned" anything. We've known for two years that Sarah stickers wouldn't fit within the protocols, not a big deal."

What protocols? sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. There is literally nothing bad then can come of athlete's showing support for someone who was a great inspiration to many and fought for equality.

Excuses? It is a blanket ban on these things. Do you think they really want to vet every single statement and sticker, even if it has the best of intentions? Certainly the political stuff would appear in discreet forms if they started allowing charitable stickers and etc. Yes, it would be amazing to see Sarah represented in that way at Sochi, but people don't need to get all up in arms over a longstanding Olympic rule.

The IOC has rules that ban athletes from representing brands, companies, movements, etc through logos larger than a certain size. That's why company logos will be taped over helmets and goggle straps etc. I don't agree with the rule but that's the rule. The Olympics are supposed to be a display if amateurism and sport, not sponsorship and corporate influence in sports. I guarantee if an athlete tried wearing an lgbt sticker too large the IOC would make them take it off. Should've just made the stickers smaller.

Really the sticker isn't particularly necessary. Every park and pipe skier in the olympics - and really every female park and pipe skier whether they're in the olympics or not - is skiing for Sarah. The fact that skiing is there at all is a celebration of her. I'd hope her contributions will be mentioned repeatedly by the athletes regardless of what country's flag they're wearing.

I know this sounds terrible, but sports in the US aren't much different (minus professional sports).

I know back when I ran track in H.S. any jewelry, large logos, or off color compression shorts where all grounds for disqualification. Didn't matter if your bracelet was in memory of a close family member.

Much respect to both, but can anyone explain why henrik can still ride with a CRJ lion on the front of his helmet but Sarah stickers are banned? Doesn't seem like a very uniform rule to me

People don't need to mob out with their pitchforks for no reason either. Call it conformity if you must, but I think that rule is in place for a pretty good reason. And a little respect to tradition never hurt anybody.

Why is Sarah celebrated more than any other skier who died doing what they loved?

I never knew Sarah. I'm sure she was a swell person. It seems like everyone on here has hopped on her bandwagon more than any other skier.

You guys need to all take a step back and realize that to the IOC, it's just a sticker. Wearing a sticker or not wearing a sticker, you can still 'ski for Sarah'.

I'm gonna be honest. It was a tragedy that she passed, just as it was a tragedy that Jamie Pierre, McConkey, CR, Coombs, or ANY OTHER skier who has died. I don't know. As an 'outsider', I just regard it as another person taken too soon.

It just seems like some of this is shallow or superficial. I truly know some of you knew, loved and dearly miss her.

She was indeed a swell person. Truly an amazing human, pioneer and a force behind getting our sport into the Olympics to begin with. I hate to see her memory leveraged into this contrived controversy, among other things. I think that is way more depressing than the IOC's no-sticker protocol.

What's so funny? The Winter Olympics used to be a complete joke. NHL players used to never play in them. The us used to send a bunch of college kids to play on the hockey team against professionals from other countries

If there is ever a need for an exception it is for Sarah. She pushed for this and if we lived in a world where everything was perfect, she would be competing, and the olympics wouldn't be in Russia. I think the athletes should wear them anyways, and make sure they inform the general public why they wore them and why they are at the olympics in the first place.

How is it contrived? I mean, it's not much of a controversy, either; I don't think anyone's TERRIBLY surprised that the IOC has strict regulations on what people can wear. But I can totally understand why people legitimately think those stickers should be on every skier participating. I look at women's freesking's participation in the games as a tribute to her memory. There is absolutely no chance it would be happening next week if not for her. So as much as any girl who drops in is skiing for their country they'll inevitably be representing her legacy, too. That should be acknowledged. I've no doubt it WILL, in other ways and in spite of this policy, but the stickers are one good way of doing that.

It is contrived outrage, because people are treating it as an exceptional incident, not something that happens to fall under a policy which has been in place for a long time. We are only a small part of the Olympics as a whole. Torah's instagram post incited a huge shitstorm, this thread included. I'm not saying that the event is perfect, or that the IOC isn't a corrupt institution in a lot of ways- but it sure seems to me like everybody within freeskiing and snowboarding is chafing at the bit to find something to riot over.

To quote Trennon Paynter again: "Sarah would never get upset over anything as small as a sticker."

And you're right, her contributions will be acknowledged. I have no doubt that her presence will be widely felt during women's halfpipe and throughout the entire games.

Seems backwards to 'fuck the olympics' b/c you can't celebrate Sarah w/ a sticker - when instead you could celebrate what she actually did, in promoting Women's skiing to the point where it's in the olympics. Whatever way you want to look at it, I guess...
