1. Don't do anything stupid
2. Take requests, tell people that you're taking requests
3. Don't play top 40 the whole night, high school kids actually have a wider range of music knowledge than you might expect
4. Play some of these songs, usually in groups of 3 or 4 in each category before switching, but it depends on how the genre goes over. This is a cheat sheet I use mostly for weddings and corporate events, for a school dance you'd obviously want to cut out a lot of the old stuff. Also I haven't updated this list for a couple months so the top 40s a bit out of date (Sorry for the excessive post)

5. Play for the ladies, and focus on their requests. Not because you want to get some, but because they're actually going to dance to the music they request. Most guys will request a song, then when you play it they'll shuffle to the back of the gym and start bobbing their heads like they're the shit and not dancing. Then you have to go kick them in the dick, which takes time, time that you could have spent focusing on what songs to play next
6. If there's a popular song out there that has a questionable beat and is tough to dance to, probably best not to play it- e.g. please don't play inner ninja. please. Also songs like wake me up are a little sketch because of the long vocal intro, everyone ends up standing around awkwardly until the beat kicks in
