I am a mechanic and have been extended a formal job offer from Aston Martin but also have a spoken job offer from Ferrari. Both require me to move from my city which is fine. The Ferrari manager has been away in Italy for LaFerrari training so I have not been able to get a hold of him for the last 2 weeks or so but in that time Aston Martin has pretty much said I am exactly what they are looking for and want me to start ASAP. Would you wait it out a bit longer to talk to Ferrari or would you just accept the job from Aston Martin.
The thing is both of the dealerships have pro's and con's that come with them. I have had job interviews with both dealers and both of the managers seem like very stand up guys and both seem to really like me. The major downfalls with Ferrari are the lack of support as they have no foremen to deal with issues on cars that you cannot resolve which is OK for me since I have worked the last 5 years without a foreman at VW/Porsche. Ferrari is also a much smaller shop with less job security due to lack of work. Aston Martin's group of guys seem like a good bunch, I had a chance to meet with all of them after my interview and they all were quite receptive to me being there which is rare for a "new guy" in a shop.
I also work for a guy locally who has a 997 GT3 cup car that he races out of California, PNW, and Utah which is very important for me to keep since it is beyond difficult to get your foot in the door with a motorsports team so the experience from my friend is worth its weight in gold. Aston Martin loved the idea of me having motorsports on my resume as well where as Ferrari seemed a bit more hesitant because he warned it gets "busy" in the summer which might not allow me time away to travel with my friend and race with his gt3.
Honestly this is the mother of first world problems but what would you do? Take the Aston job and run? Keep in mind both jobs pay roughly the same but are less than what I am making now. You take a bit of a pay cut to work on supercars which is slightly bizarre but they have no problems filling the positions. These jobs hardly ever open up to public application, it is more of who do you know and who can you poach from other shops/ dealerships.
