Any Single Malt Scotch fans on here?

What do you like? A nice peaty Islay? Or a more mild HIghland?

Reckon the 18 and older malts are worth the money? Or do you stick with the cheapest?

Straight up? Little water? 1 ice cube? How do you drink it.


Me? Well I refuse to drink blended scotch Johnny and Chivas suck and only drink the Islays on occasion. Highland Park 12 and Glenlivet 15 are my go to's. Sadly they discountinued Highland 15 which was my fav. Try to never spend over 60 bucks on a bottle.


I like to drink it in a small glass with 1 or 2 ice cubes and drink it somewhat quickly before too much ice melts.



I never drink the cheap shit either I'll drink bourbon or cognac instead if Im feeling cheap.

Are you fucking 70? My wife`s dad drinks that vile shit. I'll have some with him erry now and then but shit is nasty, mostly the glenfidich 18 yr with a drop of water

Regular glenfiddich isn't up to my standards I'd grab bourbon or henny before I bought that so dunno why someone would drink the 18. Its the shittiest 18 that is made only drank by alckies who want to feel cultured but aren't gonna go through 120 dollar bottles.


People who drink Dewars are gross too.



Bushmills is probably the best cheap whiskey that is comparable.

I'm pretty sure I had some rather nice whiskey last night. Can definitely see how its an acquired taste, it gets better with each glass though.

My dad almost always has a bottle of Macallan 18 in the house, but if we're just having a casual drink he'll usually pour Macallan 12. They're not bad. I'm not much of a scotch person though so I don't even know what's good haha.

Macallan is good stuff, have gotten it as a gift would buy if its on sale. Haven't tried the 18. Think the 10 is actually pretty good from what I remembered you don't even have to get the 12.

In response to the other guy I haven't tried many 18s Im not going to pay 35 bucks for a shot at a bar.

There are some whiskeys I will just add water and not drink with ice. Islays I don't usually ice up. But a nice soft highland is better with ice.


I can tell you that blue label sucks balls though. Haven't sampled 18 year Chivas. Id love to try high end scotch and brandy mind you would love to sample some Louis 13th.

My husband loves a good Scotch. I personally can't stand the stuff. My father got him a $200 bottle of Johnny Walker blue for Christmas and he treats it like a member of the family. The McCallen 18 he had on his 30th birthday got him hooked.

My mum and I are enjoying a glass of talisker 10 as we speak. I'm a huge fan of whiskey, though my pallet isn't so stoked on the peaty scotches (though I'm trying to develop it) I fuck with burbons and at the bar it's usually Jameson or makers. Always neat.

What's wrong with drinking it with ice?

My dad never drinks it with ice and told me not to but I didn't ask why. My dad is a Scotch man, has a lot of good bottles I'm not allowed to touch. Occasionally he gives me a glass though. I can taste the different between the different ones, but I couldn't tell you which was better between a $50 and a $200 bottle.

Why no ice? Because cold scotch sucks. I usually drink Balvenie (have a 12, 14, 15, 17, 21 right now) but this is also a go-to right now for non-special occasions. Click for larger image Anyway dude if you're on exclusively 60 dollar bottles you don't know your scotch. And Highland Park's 18 makes the 15 look like hot garbage. Honestly if you're going cheap you should see if you like Bourbon.

Dude I don't drink it that quickly. When I use ice I pour a smaller amount of scotch than normal, and have an optimal time frame to finish my 3-4 sip glass before the ice dilutes it too much.

So I get the water opening up the flavors from the melted ice. And finish my glass before its watery and shitty.


Again I do this for the softer easier to drink highlands because I treat something like highland park or glenlivet like its bourbon. For an islay I'd probably drink with water. I don't usually own my own bottle of 18 year or older stuff so Im not sure how I'd drink that to be totally honest but I probably wouldn't put ice in it.


My Glenlivet 15 I just bought only lasted 3 days. Its nice to have a good bottle for only 50 bucks that you don't feel the need to keep around for a while. Why the fuck not drink it with ice?

I would not kill a 120 dollar bottle in 3 days though!

Oh boy do I love whisky/whiskey.

Favorite scotches, blended & single malt: Talisker, Oban, Dalwhinnie, Asyla, and Ardberg.

I'm not much on bourbon, but I do love ryes.

Oddly my two favorites right now are Lagavulin 16 and McCallan 21, even though they aren't even remotely similar. Obviously those are not drinks I enjoy regularly due to the high price, those were just gifts given to me that I enjoy when family visits or other special occasions. Glenlivet 18 is probably my favorite "reasonably" priced scotch that I can drink often without remorse.

I drink it out of a tulip shaped scotch glass, no ice. Probably my favorite way to go about it. But simply due to the cost I'm more apt to drink a bourbon or whiskey for liquor, or good beer.

one time in high school one of my friends stole a bottle of laphroaig from a party he was at. we tried to drink it the next night but obviously didnt have anywhere near the pallet for it so we threw it away i think. looking back had no idea how nice it was.

so yeah thats the extent of my experience with whiskey

My dad is a scotch nut. The day he found out my little brother stole a $300 bottle of scotch and took it to a high school party to mix with coke I thought his heart was going to stop.

Suntory whiskeys from Japan are my fav personally. I have scottish blood so it is slightly bizarre to prefer Japanese whiskey

every now and then probably like 3 times a year i sip on it over 2-3 ice cubes when my dad convinces me its the thing to do with him. otherwise i dont think ive aquired a taste for fine scotch. I think he drinks Balvenie Portword (21year) and he has a few others similar but ive never enjoyed it enough to take interest

i think the time i enjoyed it most was  in the bathtub with a spliff and glass, i felt it was in the right place only then

Glenlivert double wood for a mellow day, bowmore for a rough ride, highland park for something of both worlds. No ice. If I'm drinking cask strength i ad a drop of water

Avoid using those in crystal tumblers, one of my friends once loaded up a glas with those things, sat down, gave it a bit to vigorous of a whirl and suddenly everything in a 1,37m radius was either recovered in crystal shards or whiskey.

Bump hell yeah- there's a hilariously unexpected amount of scotch threads on NS.

In the mood to buy a new bottle of scotch--any suggestions? Speysides are low on my preference list although are surprisingly what I used to drink most commonly.

Agree with OP. Chivas regal can lick my white ass. I don't put ice in whisky, however my parents bought me some Chivas 12yr and ice is the only way I can stomach it. Otherwise I use it as a mixer for hot toddy's.

A little water can actually turn down the bite of the alcohol and allow you to taste more of the flavors. But I still prefer not to on most occasions.

Age affects the flavor and mellows things out but I've also had plenty of unaged scotches that are fantastic.

Haven't had much but here's my opinions on some brands I've tried (like anyone cares haha):

Highland Park 18- really just OK. Good overall but not something I'd buy again.

Talisker 18- probably my favorite scotch so far. Something about that brine and spicy finish that lures me in.

Glenmorangie Signet- tried a sample. Pretty fucking awesome but not something to drink every day. The chocolate really is noticeable.

Macallan 12 sherry cask- OK... Could care less. Maybe it's the sherry ...

Talisker 57 North- pretty good and reasonable price point.

Glenfiddich and Glenlivet 12- ahhhhh water

Macallan 18- idk I was fucked up and the bartender was feeding me free scotch. I think it was good?

Chivas Regal 12- might as well lick a donkeys asshole

Weird bump. In my dream last night I trade the rest of a bottle of highland park 15 (grabbed one recently and have drank most since they don’t make it anymore) to some ski bum guy. He keeps showing up in the dream with other people and is holding the bottle like a boss even tho there isn’t much left and not a lot has been drank. The other part of the dream was some action movie and Sandra Bullock was running away and getting shot at from bad guys.

I am more of a bourbon fan myself. Favorites include:

Elijah Craig- Very rich with lots of flavor and spice
Gentleman Jack- A little bland but very smooth
Bulleit Bourbon- One of my favorites for the summer, easy to drink and has a good "Wild West" flavor.
Knob Creek- Hot as hell but good flavor, good for winter.
Jim Beam Black- The new "Extra Aged" stuff is garbage but back when it was actually aged 8 years it was a really good budget whiskey.

I'm with you. Good scotch is nice but over priced and good bourbon is usually more what I'm in the mood for anyways. Had a nice bottle of Oban as a gift a while back and that's really the last scotch I drank. I'd usually rather have a drink of Irish than Scotch too.
