Im sick and tired of people unaffiliated with the original content making a gif. people dont fully understand how much work goes into making edits. in a lot of cases it's how people get paid and when 15 year olds see a banger they take 30 seconds to make a gif and it gets uprated a bunch. we need to stop this. now. a prime example is the front page right now, the gif of the backy fail and the video original. while in this case it's not a money making opportunity necessarily (he could get best crash for nstv). just the fact kids have no respect for others work irks me. i might have woken up on the wrong side of the bed, but i highly doubt that as both sides of my bed are fucking awesome.
People don't get paid for the gifs though. It's just upvotes. Right? I'm genuinely asking cause I don't see the issue since gifs are basically a moving screenshot, not creation of any sort.
no you wont get paid for gifs, for me it's more the principal. i love gifs and i guess there is no realistic solution. i got a little heated this morning when i woke up to that. but iv seen it more times than i can count.
No worries, I gotcha. It's a shift in credit for the original content in your eyes. Totally understand that. But in the end, I don't think anyone assumes that the poster of the GIF has any affiliation to the creation of the original content. And when they see the GIF, more often than not they're clambering to find the full video to see it in its entirety. In my opinion you should see it as free press because it will result in more views in the long-run rather than a blast of views and then letting your video get buried in the nonsense after a week.
For example, that Asian backy gif will live on and get posted in more threads down the line, which will inspire people who never saw the video to go "whoa.....I need to find the original video of that."
Have to agree. I'd say it's pretty annoying when the front page is cluttered by gifs. Especially when a good chunk of them end up being made by the same kid with nothing to do with the original edits.
and i guess iv put a lot of effort into all the content i upload to this site and to see people benefiting (ya ya i know, they get karma wooohoo) from others work annoys me.
Just to clarify, I've cut back on the GIFs but I was also originally asked by an admin to start posting the VOTD GIFs that I make for the NS tumblr on here.
I also give credit where credit is due and post the link to the video in the first comment so it is not like I am claiming it as my own work.
see i dont mind it when you do them, ya they were in excess but you cut back. im more talking about people unaffiliated with the website, meaning they asked you, these others are going out of there way to benefit from others awesome content. especially when they give no credit. prime example was the backy. while this is edit was more of a joke it still proves my point.
Now I'm beefin with gifs, I put 8+ hours into an urban shot along with getting hurt on failed attempts, I'm grateful for the score it has right now (seriously, best score I've gotten on a photo!) but some kid makes a gif that took about a minute to make and it shoots up through the home page way faster than my picture. Just a pet peeve more than anything. I like most of the gifs, but they just shoot down good pictures that took a ton of time to get.
I personally really enjoy seeing gifs, as I often don't have time to check every single edit -- but if I see a gif that's dope, 99% of the time I'll check out said edit. With that being said, it really pisses me off when members fail to give proper credit.
The question is though, is this just a Newschoolers problem? And is this just a problem with gifs?
I'm going to take the frontflip gif as an example, since it's already been used here. Did you know that Downdays posted it here and here, without credit or a link back to the original piece of content? If Krotch would have originally included a link to the video, would people be less pissed? The video was never posted on NS, so it's not like there would be repeated content on the homepage.
If it wasn't a gif but the video, would there be the same reaction? Line Skis posted that video on Youtube April 21st, but never uploaded it to Newschoolers -- would people be pissed if someone else (other than Line) uploaded that video? They didn't make the video, and might not even give proper credit, but they will get the Karma, and IMO NS as a whole will benefit from more content being shared. Yes, I know people can just click the video to see more information, but how often does that happen?
We originally started creating and posting gifs to tumblr to drive more traffic to the videos, and I thought it would be cool to repost them on NS later, once the videos have ran their course on the home page. Check it out in action here: http://newschoolers-on.tumblr.com/
Yes, not everyone who will see that gif will click and watch the video. But I can almost guarantee that by creating the gif, we're getting a LOT more eyes on the content (skiers, filmers, video) than we would without it.
That was a shitload of rambling, but I basically want to try and isolate the main problems here, have you guys vote on them, and then try and find a solution as a community. I'm going to list potential problems, and update them as you give me more. Once we have a a decent list, we'll create some potential solutions, and then I'll create a new thread with their explanations & a poll.
- NS shouldn't allow gifs
- gifs should have their own category (Videos, Photos, News, Discussions, Gear, Gifs)
- gifs should have their own category within Pictures
- gifs shouldn't be on the home page
- gifs need proper enforcing of credits & links
Mousseau- gifs need proper enforcing of credits & links
This.
And if someone doesn't give credit in the description, delete it. Also if the owner of the original content doesn't want someone else posting a gif of their video, they should be able to have an admin/mod remove it upon request.

What else am I missing?
I think you're a genius, I'm thinking the poll could possibly have a multiple choice option, to a ranked choice option? it would probably be hard to implement but they are usually more accurate.
For what you might be missing: I think possibly an altered ranking system for gifs to get on the home page, they are currently ranked the same as pictures but they always get way higher scores than good pictures usually get which shoots them to the top (an unfair playing field imo). Maybe I'm just butthurt (and literally nuthurt) that my urban pic that I put a ridiculous amount of time into didn't get as much appreciation because of all the gifs and photoshops on the homepage.

But what if it's their video and don't care to credit or link to the video? What if the gif was created solely to be uploaded, and there isn't a video somewhere? What if we delete it, only to have it reposted by the same user or someone else? Removing content on request can be tricky as well, as we're often the ones creating the gif for our VOTD posts... or we simply don't have a slick enough system to do this efficiently. A lot of "what ifs" (and yes I know a few of them are a stretch), but a lot of times simple solutions actually take a lot of manpower to implement.
Also, what do we do about videos? If you were to upload the original Line Skis video and Line Skis emailed me and ask to take it down, should Newschoolers abide by the request?

Ah this is a very good point! The only way to do this will to be create a new category for gifs -- which would allow us to change the input fields as well (so for example, "Link to original video").

Just to clarify, not that you said I didn't in the past, but any other time I would include the link as first comment and there is no issue. I think I'm one of the few people who post GIFs that include all proper accreditation AND a link to the video in the comments.
.Hugo.This.

I agree with this. I know they don't mean to take it as their own content (if they do then they are stupid) but a little credit goes a long way in helping that athlete and filmer get some exposure, especially if the GIF shoots to the top of the homepage.
Looking at some of my highest rated GIFs, they all have roughly 4k-6k views and the lift flip one is at 12k.
Even if half of those people check out the link in the description, thats a shit ton of people to view that video because of a simple GIF.
As previously said but just to reiterate, I love GIFs. I think they bring something amazing to the table and like Jason said, it brings out the banger trick from one edit because who has time to watch all the good videos that come out daily? Once we are able to fine tune the GIFs proper place on the site (homepage, seperate delegation as to not overshadow photos, ect) I think they will be an even bigger success and be able to help out videographers/skiers get their content out to the masses.
Side note: Just looked at Top Community rankings (not that it matters really) but I'm 83rd or something ridiculous like that in the Top Photographers because of the GIFs I've posted.

I love seeing the GIFs, I personally have watched probably twice as many edits as I would because of them. Generally the GIF is the banger trick, so when I see it and I like it I go watch the whole video. I can see how it is annoying to photographers though, having a photo be beaten out in ratings by a moving picture is kind of annoying. So I'd like to propose 2 ideas:
1) GIFs have their own section, it won't stop them from showing up on the homepage, but it will help the photo section seem more in order.
2) When uploading a video, there is an OPTION to add a gif as the thumbnail. I'm pretty sure I heard either Jason or Doug talking about adding customized thumbnails to videos, if the GIF was the thumbnail it would solve both problems. Then make it so mods or whoever can download said GIF file and it can then be uploaded to proper social networking sites for hype. This way the producer of the video gets to choose what shot will represent his video, not someone else, and it will cut down on doubling up the homepage. Bonus points if a GIF creator is added to upload process (not sure on how difficult that would be....but it would be cool and more people would add GIFs that way).
what's really frustrating are the really low quality gifs with the watermark that the person clearly put zero effort into making that get scored really high. I mean I realize gifs take little effort in the first place, but if you're going to rip someone else's work off at least try a tiny bit. (I realize I've uploaded a few gifs)

This is what you get on the front page:
this is what it should be:
a peeve of mine
We need the shitty gifs to go away for sure. Thanks for putting them up side by side, that second one is money.
