So i am a art major at franklin pierce and its in NH and relatively close to some mountains but as of a couple days ago the school is actually taking away their liberal arts! so they took away graphic design and all the fine arts and such so i found this to be a huge bummer so I'm planning on transferring next year and was wondering what are some good schools that offer graphic design and are close to resorts. I was thinking Plymouth state or saint mikes or something. Any help would be much appreciated thanks
He's saying experience is more important than a degree when it comes to getting a job. Which is true, but you'd be stupid to not still get your degree. I have three people I know who were in Graphic Design and got laid off. You'd be in bad shape if you didn't have a degree to fall back on. I don't know about good schools, but you 100% need to make sure you're doing something in the GD field while you're going to school or you'll be hard pressed to find something.
thank you for putting it in those terms and yes i have done a lot with photoshop in the past and have some good experience with doing non profit things with ppl that just need stuff designed but yes I'm deffinatley gunnna get a degree so I'm more legitimate but yes the more you do the better you'll be and thus get jobs, thanks for the feedback
No problem. Are you looking for an arts college? (i.e. RISD or similar) or are you looking for a University or state college that just has a good arts program?
^ I agree with this, but to answer your question- Check out Sierra Nevada College. Its not solely an art school, I am majoring in enpt. and graphic design. We are moving into a new mac lab soon.
That sounds sooosoo tempting but unfortunately neither me or my family have the funds to go westward, believe me its a dream to go out there but I'm mostly looking for the northeast, just curious home much is sierra nevada?
Im just finishing up a graphic design degree and Montana State University in Bozeman MT. Great school, good town, fantastic skiing, and tuition isnt that bad ether. Check it out.
I went to Keene State for GD, great design dept, and about an hour from Okemo, Snow, Stratton, Sunapee and more. Not to mention Keene is a super fun town. You've been given a great opportunity to get out of Rindge. (And if you go to Keene, an opportunity to save some money)
awesome response thank you! and ik rindge sucks and its barley in NH and keene is cool but i think id rather get further away from FPU cuz keens only like 20 min away from here
Totally understandable, if you change your mind Keene is a steal for the education. And regarding all the people saying you don't need a degree? Unless you're really lucky, and do some serious networking with some very wealthy people who are willing to pay you a ton to freelance, you almost always need a degree. Take a look at any job listings. Having photoshop is not the same as being a designer.
Side note: Check out the podcast, Adventures in Design. Hilarious dudes (which are actually the exception because I don't think the host has a degree) Episode 22 is a good one to start with. aidpodcast.com
Network, ya know. Put yourself out there. Meet people and nonstop look for opportunities.. In a field with a lot of competition, your personality and ability to communicate with people can put you in the lead for a competitive position.
Amen to that. OP to answer your question Central Washington U and Art institute of Seattle are both 45 minutes away from Alpental and easy driving distance from Stevens, Crystal, and Baker. Both of these schools have pretty good GD programs and Seattle is a great area to live for GD. A lot of start-ups and companies that need design work done for them.
