Tell me about Alaska - Going on a road trip

Got the month of May paid and off. Lady friend and I are driving up to AK and back from the SL,UT area.

What is there to see along the way? She used to live in Juneau, so I am sure we may stop there. We are gona push more north after and see Denali. Looking for more cool stuff in between or close or whatever. Share the spots, info, goods, whatever you got!

Will be bring the sticks and skins. Got to get turns in here and there.

We will camp along the way, hotels here and there to shit/shower/shave/laundry. Plan to do it all in a Month, so leave May 1 get back June 1. Give or take.

I'm aware of current weather and long term forecast which look bleak.

Also, I am going in May, which is 3+ months from now.

Skiing is just a bonus on the trip. So snow is whatever.

stop in ketchikan when a cruise ship comes in and watch the tourists flock to the jewelry stores.

Definitely go into the backcountry at Denali. I spent a month there working and this was by far the best thing I did the whole time

well i can tell you the roads are going to be super rough in may due to frost heaves.
if you plan on going into denail park id look into when the buses start running or plan on doing that to the end of your trip.

i reccomend going on a fishing charter if you make it to the kenai penisula. ill be working on a boat so let me know if youre intrested in that.

look online for hot springs to stop and camp at going through canada lots of nice ones.

Denali is a must! Get out to Wonder Lake if at all possible; further if you can.

And fishing is also a must.

I was fortunate enough to spend just over 3 weeks in Alaska traveling around and getting to do and see as much as possible. Traveled by plane, van, train, boat, kayaks, and my own two feet during that short period. Caught more fish than I could eat in 10 years, played on glaciers, spent a few days seakayaking around the Prince William Sound, attended a two day music festival and camped/backpacked in Denali park from the visitor's center to the end of the park and into backcountry areas. Yet I feel like I only scratched the surface. I'm looking forward to going back as soon as I can.

drive on some remote road (don't get lost and die) and just take it all in. Just experience it. I am so unbelievably jealous, i've wanted to go/live in alaska since I was like 7 years old. fuck

I think 3 weeks will be about the time frame I will be there too. I hope to get a day or two backpacking/camping trip in as well.

I will bring a fishing pole for sure. I think throwing out a line out in the middle of nowhere will be amazing. Catch dinner. Take it all in.

No small planes for me though! Terrified of those things.

Go up through BC via Alaska Highway and hit up the Liard River Hot Springs between Fort Nelson and the Yukon. Best hot springs I have been do, hands down. On your way back down through BC, drive the Dease Lake road and check out Hyder, AK.

Stop and do a hike in Kluane National Park between Whitehorse and the Alaska border if you can and check out the massive glaciers.


On good snow years I've been told that skiing in May can be hit or miss (March/April is when you want to be up there for skiing). Considering it's pretty much February and they are not doing very well, I'd almost just say fuck it and leave the skis at home. Just go and enjoy the sights.

yes liard hot springs is tits. i was going to recommend stopping there but i didnt know how to spell it.
also it is a long ass drive so take into consideration about a week each way if you dont want to be driving all day

Bring rain gear, go hiking and fishing. Get on a boat. It can be quite rainy here but don't let it stop you from being outside!

in the summer it's always light
Denali is sick I went on a bus nature tour in th e summer and saw almost 20 bears, 10+ moose, caribou etc, an lots of other cool stuff.
that was almost 10 years ago tho
