The entire city of Atlanta shut down by 4 inches of snow

Is anyone else following this story? Abandon cars, looting, everything is shut down, mayor delcared state of emergancy and they got 4 fucking inches of snow...

I mean look at this picture, the highway is basically clear, wtf

Dude people are stuck here after hawks games for hours normall. If you've ever seen seattle streets you'd understand how parts of it are pretty much impassable in any amount of snow, even for good drivers with the right equipment. Good lucj getting on to i5 with snow. The only way up some of these hills In the snow is a winch.

No I will absolutely blame it on any person stupid enough to not see this coming. If the government doesn't stop you from driving into a wildfire does that mean it's their fault when you do and burn up? Look, when you have a few days to see something coming, you prepare. I mean shit, I would seriously have called out of work anticipating the worst- and not because I couldn't handle myself, because I know idiot southerners aren't prepared in any way to deal with that shit.



In all my travels to the south the "regional standard of intelligence" seems to drop off drastically right around the NC border. Atlanta was probably the dumbest place I've ever spent real time in and I mean slow and ignant on a whole new level. Ice storms fuck anyplace up- but Atlanta? Fuck. That. If I lived there and saw that coming I can honestly say I would be way ahead of that shit. You can't be stuck in 24hrs of traffic if you're chilling at home re-watching every episode of every season of Top Gear on Netflix.

Even living in denver, when there's 4+ inches in the forecast, you can be sure the plows are fired up and they're ready to clear and prep these streets like they're supposed to. It's STILL going to be a bitch. I take my shit home and I'm ready to just stay home because I know what's coming.

Dude, seriously the craziest shit I have ever seen. I've lived in the mtns in NC for 5 years and lived in big sky MT for 3 and have never seen driving conditions this bad. Ever. The storm dropped about 4 inches everywhere when it was around 30 degrees, it all melted on the roads, then a cold front moved through and it dropped to around 18 and froze solid. Literally 2 inches of solid ice on every road in metro ATL. Mix that with 95% 2wd drive cars and horrible drivers and you have a recipe for disaster.

I left my office at 1 not knowing how bad the roads really were, I've lived in the mountains and have a truck with 4wd, I know how to drive in shit conditions, wasn't too worried about it. Literally took me 7 and a half hours to get home. 18 mile commute. 7.5 GOD DAMN HOURS, and honestly, I was one of the lucky ones.

It looked like a god damn zombie apocalypse out there. Hundreds of accidents literally everywhere. Thousands of cars flipped over, in ditches, and just abandoned in the roads. Thousands of people walking. Towards the end I was hopping medians, driving on the wrong side of the road, driving down sidewalks, it was pure anarchy on the roads.

It's a pretty well known fact that rwd is the worst option you can have in slippery conditions, you can't even argue it's not.

Regardless, it didn't really matter what kind of vehicle you had, there was 2 inches of solid ice on every road. Sure having front or 4wd and knowing what you're doing helped, but ice is ice. You could have ice skated on every single road in the city.

The problem was how it was managed. Every city in the US starts prepping the roads before snow hits, putting down salt and gravel on hills and bridges etc. Atlanta only owns 35 salt trucks, and they didn't dispatch them until it was already snowing and icing, at the same time over a million people left school and work.

i guess a few people died because of no heat in the houses. its been cold as fuck up here in vt. i drive a 45 min comute on some gnar roads every day to work when it gets icy i know to stay off the interstate because there are always accidents and shit. i saw 2 people go off the road infront of me going 50 this year and 3 people crashed around me on the highway it was fucked. just drive slow stay on side roads. duhh

worst? FWD is more stable yes, but under acceleration once the weight is transfered to the rear RWD is better, more capable than FWD while cornering, gives you more control, and you dont go to straight understeer if you get on throttle in the middle of a corner. id rather have RWD over FWD in snow. though FWD can be pretty fun.

the issue is "big city driving". When you are driving in a big city (ATL, NYC, CHI, SF etc) you have to generally be a very aggressive driver to not constantly get snaked/piss everyone else off. This is the exact opposite driving style needed for snow/icy.

When you pack a shit ton of people into a small space with shitty roads and an aggressive attitude...bad things happen. Thats why all crowded areas turn to shit shows when the roads turn to shit.

I just got back from 3 days in North Carolina, and we got there on Thursday night when they were still trying to clean up. On Thursday, two to three days after a few inches of snow, the airport had just opened at 3 pm, every business was still closed, and most of the roads were unplowed. It was actually kind of gnarly driving in the rental car because the biggest problem was that everything iced, so the roads were unbelievably slippery and all the chunks that weren't plowed were stuck to the road.

Coming from Mass, it was kinda hilarious to see how shut down it was but also scary. The local schools were closed for almost a full week, and people didn't have heat and it was pretty damn cold. Definitely an eye-opener for me, I didn't believe how much chaos it could cause but it makes a lot of sense once you see it.
