I think we have a limited amount of cards to play given our exploding population, fossil fuel issues, climate change, etc.
I think writing off GMOs due to a few "bad feelings" would be a big mistake. I'm by no means qualified to really speak about the evidence for or against GMOs, but from the few classes/profs I've had who touched on the subject, they have been proven safe so far. It seems to me like it is mostly just fear-mongering propaganda. As of now (as far as I've been told), there is no evidence against GM crops, so why not continue to develop the technology that could possible have some revolutionary benefits?
Golden rice has already been mentioned, but here is another interesting one; a flower that changes colour when it comes into contact with landmines.
Having said that, I don't think it's entirely ridiculous to be a bit wary of the motives/practices of the corporations developing these technologies. Big business has a bad track record when it comes to environmental damage, deception etc., so I think people aren't necessarily wrong to question what is going into their food, however it seems like honest inquiry is being replaced by fear mongering propaganda and junk science when it comes to the debate on GMOs among the general public. Although, I do think that people should have the right to know if their food is GMO or not.
