Fuck Macklemore and fuck all the dickriders of Macklemore who seem him as some sort of progressive visionary for rap music.
Macklemore may have a message but at the end of the day, he's removed, his lyrics are second hand experiences. GKMC depicted the struggle of literally good kid in a mad city. The skits were brilliant, and the production and composition of the tracks were remarkable. What could a white privileged rapper like Macklemore possibly have to rap about? Hypocritical anti-capitalist raps (Thrift Shop, Wings) and lackluster, spoken pro-gay rights messages over a melodic beat? How progressive! Kendrick depicted the plight of a kid growing up in gang-riddled America, what dire straits did Macklemore have in Seattle? Lastly, wordplay has always been and always will be a key element to hip hop. Lines like "Usually I'm drug free, but shit I'm with the homies" and "Projects tore up gang signs get thrown up" are a lot more authentic and veritable than "When I was in the third grade I thought that I was gay" and "Walk into the club like what up I got a big cock."
GKMC is a story of a young kid growing up in Compton resorting to the solutions many young kids find in the poverty stricken areas of America; gangs and thievery. By the end, Kendrick is an enlightened man illuminating his past and the troubles that he and his friends faced and how he came to rise above it. This is seriously a step backward for hip hop.
good kid, m.A.A.d city is a classic rap album and will go down in the books as one, Grammy or not.
i really dont see how him taking about overcoming drug problems is second hand. Not to mention most of his songs aren't meant to be deep either they are just meant to be fun. Cant hold us for example wasn't made to make people rethink their life, it was just meant to be fun.
This whole post is one of the better ones I've read on NS, I can imagine why Macklemore would win because the voting probably looked at hit singles more than quality of the work. By no means is Macklemore a bad artist, hell I saw him live and it was the most entertaining show I've ever been too. But GKMC should have won hands down
Typical NS. 8 months ago, when Macklemore was still mostly unknown, everyone was bragging about how they picked up The Heist, (go back and look at the PYLP thread) and everyone was giving them props for being such a sick album. Now that he's gotten famous, NS instantly goes super-hipster and talk about how he's overrated and played. Sickening and hilarious at the same time.
Wow that was actually and absurdly good performance of music right there. That just upped my respect even more for both of them, and Kendrick should have been an easy choice
I for one have always hated Macklemore and most likely always will. He doesn't rap and it's annoying that people consider it rap. Thrift shop is the fucking shittiest song ever too
Implying that the only real rappers are underprivileged black kids that havent grown up in good living conditions. You're annoying and your logic is terrible. A rap song doesn't have to have a super deep meaning to be good.
He knows 2 shitty ass songs about being gay and being broke made him. I respect him for basically admitting it.
Average/ok rapper hes not that bad outside those 2 songs but those 2 songs seriously fucking blow and I am sure he hates performing them more than anything.
Its mind boggling that a white boy rapper similar to Maclemore took so long to blow up. We should have had a version of him in the 80s let alone the 90s or 2000s.
I think Eminem being huge just killed demand for another white rapper for 15 years.
Kendrick should deffinatly have won. I´ve been a fan since I first listened to Section 80.He´s in my top 3 alongside Guru and Talib.
That being said, Maklemore isn´t that bad. Listen to this
It's foolish this has turned into a Macklemore hate fest and not a our generation and overall popular music taste is garbage hate fest. Although I'm not a huge fan of Macklemore him and Ryan Lewis are clearly both talented and appreciate good rap music. I mean he fucking admitted he shouldn't have won, that takes a man. That being said it's still fucking absurd Kendrick didn't win considering he has one of the first extremely memorable rap albums in quite some time.
There's a big difference between hating Macklemore and hating his music. As an individual there's a lot about him to respect. Read up on him a little bit, he's one of the most honest and open people in the industry. In terms of his music though, I think he makes pop music and that Grammy belongs to Ye or Kendrick.
