so your're gonna be happy when you are hired to come into a foreign country to do work (of which you might not actually get paid for) and then youre put up for a month in a place without hot water, drinkable water, and nothing else that's remotely comfortable. If this had happened other places besides Russia, there would be a huge outcry in the media.

It seems as it gets closer to the games, and more people/journalists go there, the news coming out of there will be worse and worse (that is, if they can actually report the news)

From what I see in the pictures it doesn't look like shit has changed at all from the time a bunch of us were there last year. The only new thing I see is the never ending terrorist threats and news stories to go hand in hand with them.

I don't care how shitty the snow is or the accommodation or anything along those lines. I am solely hoping for the safety of every athlete and their families during these games.

Yes, other than a lack of drinking water the accommodations, while very sub par, are liveable and the least of my concerns. The bigger issue is it seems like none of the Russians have their shit together, terrorists are ready to attack, There isnt any snow, building isnt even finished, and the area is about to be packed with hundreds of thousands of extra people. 2 weeks is not enough time to fix this, especially considering that withing a week athletes, fans, and journalists will start to arrive. Not to mention Pollard's hospital experience there, this just seems like a giant shit fest.

Tom should be glad he's not going.

I think others have touched on this but I'd like to reiterate it for members who can't necessarily comprehend this because we have it so good in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand (where the majority of NSers are from) but bribes account for 20% of Russia's GDP. All it would take for someone to cause a catastrophic event such as a bombing at the olympics would be an organization or person to hand the right people the right amount of money. You may think, oh well it's not that simple, the US, and the IOC, are involved etc. This is not the case, they may try to play it off like they are involved in security, but once these athletes enter Russia, it's all on the Russian government. There is no way Putin's Kremlin is letting ANYONE from ANY OTHER COUNTRY, ESPECIALLY THE US have any involvement in these games, be it something so crucial such as security.

Furthermore, who is at all surprised that most of the infrastructure is not even close to being finished yet? All of the infrastructure is being handled by State controlled companies such as RAO UES. I'm 100% sure all of the workers were chugging handles of vodka sitting around playing russian roulette. People can disagree with the legitimacy of the ideals of communism but think to yourself, why in the fuck would any of these workers/companies be motivated to complete the job when they're making the same meager shitty pay either way?

Will be extremely interesting to see this get pulled off. Seems like the concerns that everyone had last year when they went there haven't really been addressed. I'd be more worried about the medical plans than anything else though. Snowsports are dangerous and they certainly didn't have the right medical facilities set up this time last year.

At least Russia cares about hockey first and foremost and will make sure the rink is built. They won't fuck that up and thats all I care about.

This olympics is a fucking joke though. I barely want to cheer for USA in puck after Martin and Orpik got picked by their coach fucking scumbag. The skiing will blow (I don't give a fuck about free skiing either I prefer the Bode Miller stuff comp free skiing is lame as fuck) and I bet the bobsled track sucks. Its a joke that lolo jones is going stupid bitch. I hope the Jamaican team does well though.

I just want Lolo Jones's sled to crash and I'll be happy.

But yeah hopefully one of the joke ass sports gets cancelled so more coverage goes to hockey.

Figure skating will be rigged a Russian will win it. Hopefully terrorists take out the dude figure skaters cause I only like watching the ladies.

Also, heres a thought: where is the 51billion$ going to if they cant even afford to build average accommodation.. I wonder if the course builders got chinced with poor accommodation, or if the athletes, coaches, staff and people visiting to watch the games will have the same accom...

I feel like there are always ridiculous conditions and issues in the weeks leading up to every Olympics and this is not a whole lot different. Most countries seem to be able to pull their stuff together by the time the athletes show up. Was China any different? Greece? Will Rio be any different?

We are definitely lucky to live where we do, but hosting the games is a ridiculous amount of infrastructure to establish. The fact of the matter is the winter Olympics simply haven't been held in a sketchy country for a really long time. Sarajevo maybe? They usually seem to be held in North American or European countries, so infrastructure and money is already in place.

The terrorist stuff is definitely sketchy.

At least that smog-hole got a slick airport upgrade and a massive subway expansion, not to mention a bunch of cool stadiums that are just decaying with neglect. What the hell did Sochi get, aside from some shitty hotels and a few tree swaths cut down for some ski runs?

I'm not saying a terrorist attack can't happen, but you seem to be a little confused. Security regarding terrorism is a whole lot different than in 1972. International terrorism was a new concept in 72, in fact Munich was one of the events that started it, and brought attention to it. So 40 years later, the authorities are well aware that terrorist attacks are a serious threat, especially in Russia. Like someone mentioned, the security is going to be unbelievably tight. So bringing large quantities of fertilizer is most likely not an option.

This 100%. Everyone else: you are completely wrong. I live in england, and I can tell you there was a shit show in the weeks before the games. Everyone thought it wouldn't work, wouldn't be finished on time etc. But guess what? It was, and the games were considered amazing. Don't judge until its over.

PS, the area around the games in london, stratford, was MEGA sketch before the olympics.
