People give shit on the Kilo because everyone and their mom gets one off bikesdirect and it's saturated fixieland... but now for under 400$ off citygrounds you can also get what's basically now just a generic Aventon... so it's all becoming about the same.
I love the Kilo TT for some very strange reasons - namely the fact that it's basically a vintage style frame in a new build.
1" headset. italian standard seattube. vintage brand. vintage geometry. Anything you can throw on an old italian pista bike from the 1970s will go on the Kilo TT. It's a modern classic.
I'm looking for a good classic looking threaded fork to throw on the front. I have a sweet Cinelli road fork I'd absolutely put on it, but the steerer just isn't long enough at all.. so it will remain on my cannondale.
ultimately, i'd love to outfit the thing with all classic pista components - either Campy or Gipiemme or something... but in the meantime it looks pretty generic... here's what it will look like when I finally stop derping around with my roadbikes and get this thing in action.

The kilo tt is just a damn good bike, they are well spec'd, have nice tubing, are modest/classic looking, and they come in some damn good looking colors, esecially when most bikes on the market are either unicorn-shit-rainbow, or black.

Although I didn't want a hiten frame, I picked up a new pure fix for 120 off craigslist. I still have yet to pick up any foot retention but I'm going to slowly replace parts and eventually the frame. So far I've only had a few close calls on campus but they had it coming. Definitely loving fixed, but I need to get rid of this shit seat and some other parts.

Yeah, and there are multiple styles of the bike too. The WT accepts up to like a 38c if you're into fatties... the stripper means you can take off the decals... Whoever is doing mercier these days is doing the company well.
520 reynolds is just as good as 531, only it lacks the heat treatment.. which doesn't make it any lighter.. just more tensile strength - which isn't really necessary anyway. 520 is REALLY good stuff.
I got my frameset, with headset, seatpost, bars and stem for all of 100$. In purple. I'm running some b43's laced to gran compe hubs on it right now - but it's not a classic look. I plan on running a sugino 75, or other 144 bcd crank with a 45t zen ring wrapped to a 15t dura-ace rear cog soon enough. i'll probably build up some vintage tubulars to some high flanges once I get a pair of hubs I really like... Once I thread the fork this week i'll be running a full 3t cockpit with a selle italia seat.
When I'm done with this thing, it's going to be pure modern classic sex.

...but really, you can kinda make your own chain lock for cheap.
Go to a hardware store, buy enough chain to throw over your shoulder (something thick enough that it can't just be sliced without a serious bolt cutter) then get a tough old masterlock, shouldn't cost more than a couple bucks at the same hardware store, buy some gaffer tape and wrap it around the chain, and link it all together with the tough ass lock. throw it over your shoulder and you have a lock for like 10$ that's just as tough as any bullshit you'd spend 80-90 on.
Ulocks are fine, but if you get one and you really want to protect your stuff, make sure it's got double keyed locks, so they can't just break the one lock with a blunt force whack and steal your crap because the lock is just a single key...
or even something with a disk key would be pretty good. those are hard to pick. Example would be the master lock double shot or whatever it's called.

Today was the first winter ride, just around campus and to class, but the cyclocross front tire and slick on the back is really fun and gives a bit of extra confidence on whip skids with the extra front grip.

Not bad, but I've also seen people build up Aventon Cordovas for like 250$ brand new out of affordable parts from eighthinch and origin8 and whatnot.
in all honesty, if a bike comes with a good set of componentry attached to a shit steel frame, i'd buy the bike, buy a decent frameset, swap everything, and sell the crap steel frameset as brand new for a cheaper than fair price. A frend of mine did that with a 17tooth keno build, swapped the parts onto a Leader 725 frameset he got for cheap due to ugly paint, sold the keno frame and somehow broke even all with a pretty decent set of wheels, considering...
fixed gears are cheap as balls to build. Especially if you have a bike co op nearby and are able to find locally sourced parts from ebay for cheap.
Is there a difference between a fixed gear and a single speed? Also I can get my head around riding a fixed gear up hills because I'm not too much of a pussy but going downhill its terrifying having the pedals just spinning.

single speed can have a free wheel as opposed to a fixie not having a free wheel. so on a fixie if the rear wheel is spinning so are your feet. not always the case on a single speed.

If you're going to get any 200$ bike, get a Windsor "The Hour". It's like 199 on bikesdirect, and is miles better than any of that Purefix/Zycle/Vilano/6KU/Eightinch hi-ten junk out there that weighs as much as a regular chrom-oly roadbike, and are spec'd as cheap as can be.
Hell, the wheelset on The Hour is like 120$ alone, so that's not too bad, really. It's a magnificently well spec'd bike for it's price. Not quite as good as a Kilo TT, but in the same neighborhood for half the price. Not bad.
If you are going to get a Hi-Ten frame bike, then get the 17Teeth Pista. Good crankset, really a pretty great wheelset, and comes with a pretty decent cockpit to boot. If I was spending 200$ thats the bike I'd buy, hands down (plus it looks vintage and rad)

Fuck yeah, just found a fixed rear wheel at a consignment store for $22 for my road frame I am converting this summer. Not planning on buying a new wheelset for it now so it is a true budget build. Origin 8/formula hub, Halo Aerotrack rim, and a 28mm conti gatorskin with quite a few more miles left on it. Not the fanciest, but still a fuckin steal. The only issue is it's white, I hate white rims.
does anyone know where I could find a drop bar road bike with a coaster brake. Basically the raliegh tripper but with drop bars and hopefully cheaper? It sounds like it would be super fun for my area where there are enough hills that a fixed gear would be uncomfy

the new fgfs' are basically bmx bikes with 26 wheels so you need to find an older one
I picked one up for super cheap here in Bozeman and rode it around all school year when I was a freshman. It was so fun to ride a fixed gear around on the ice we have most of the time but so sketchy haha the bike ended up getting stolen at the end of the year, unfortunately.
I'm starting to get tempted to get a fixed gear again. I moved to a bigger city and I'm literally two blocks away from an outdoor velodrome and it looks awesome.
not a fixed gear or track bike but I fixed up and painted an old 1984 Schwinn Super Le Tour. This is just my summer commuter so I don;t wanna sink too much money into it because I would rather spend money on my trail bike. It was a fun project though and I am pretty happy with how it turned out considering this was my first time and the bike was in pretty rough shape when I started.
I stripped all the old paint off down to bare steel and then primed it all in white. I taped off all the lugs and painted the tubes gray. Then I put on a couple coats of clear. Some taping spots turned out better than others but I like it.
And proof that it gets ridden. And I am a mountain biker. you can tell because I stand all the time.
