I need a new car

NSG, my beloved outback has developed a severe case of chassis rust and it's time to sell. So, I pose the question to you: what do I replace it with? I mainly use my car for commuting, skiing, towing a 2000 pound trailer, and road trips in the summer. My requirements are decent gas mileage(20+ on the highway), bullet proof reliability, 4x4 or AWD, lots of trunk space, some off-road capability (dirt trails to go biking, camping etc.), and of course it needs to be cool.
cars I've been looking at are another outback, Jeep liberty (too womanly), Cherokee (not reliable), ford explorer (tends to explode)

anyone got some advice? +k for useful advice

Get a Volvo. Either a 240, s70, v70, or xc70.

Volvos are Unparrelel Automotive supremacy.

They are actually harder than diamonds. They're made out of a material called Volvonium, mined in the mountains of Sweden by hard-working Nordic Gnomes. After the material is melted by launching it into the sun via herring-powered rocket, the molten Volvonium is allowed to cool slightly, and is then beaten into shape by Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor.

TRD i got a '98 and love it. cost 70 bucks to fill up and lasts forever. plus you know its a yota and will last forever.

another car to consider would be a audi A4 1.8T, they got AWD which is awesome and you got a turbo in it somewhat sporty and functional aswell

You should definitely switch to a stage v golf mk1 as soon as you get to stage v its actually only qualified as a spaceship. It beat the reliant robin to the moon actually

I'm in a similar boat as OP. My accord won't be big enough for college travels and skiing.

My needs:
-Wagon
-Seats 5
-Easy to find with manual transmission
-Seats fold flat
-Reliable
-Easy to find with stock roof rails
-20+mpg on highway
-around 8 to 10 grand at most
-somewhat sporty
-reliable

I have been looking at some Volvo wagons, the Outback/Legacy wagon, or maybe a Tacoma with a topper

Just get another outback. It fits in your description perfectly, but this time, how bout give it a wash instead of letting it rust. Salt on the roads is killer to any cars frame. During the winter I run my car through a pressure washer once a week. Sure it might seem like a waste of money, but in the long run whats more expensive? Getting a new car, or getting a car wash?

As far as rust protection on the new car- Get a few gallons of used motor oil and paint+spray the whole undercarriage twice a winter

As far as the new car goes id buy a pickup truck. My 3/4 ton dodge cummins gets 25mpg on the hwy and will pull a 15k lb trailer like its not even there. Just did a 300mile haul with a 28k lb gross. Definitely noticed the trailer but it was only when braking. Plus i got 17mpg while towing which is unheard of with a gas or most other diesels for that matter

From the safety end, unless i hit a big rig ill probably be fine. My bumper would peel back the roof of most any "car" on the road. Plus who wouldnt want to drive 8800lbs of steel every day

As far as the rust issue goes, the car came to me from the east coast and my aunt who gave it to me didn't do enough to prevent rust. I plan on doing all the rust prevention I can on my next vehicle. Right now I'm leaning towered an 05 Liberty Renegade highhood

Can't look at that on mobile but I don't know anyone who drives a full size pickup that gets 18, 16 is really the highest on avg. Unless it's a newer one I guess, not many people I know can afford a newer one so I can't comment on that.

Idk what you think about a jeep compass? but those are relatively inexpensive. If you're looking for a car i would say go subaru, if truck go toyota.

I want an SUV but I drive in the city a lot so a smaller one is preferable. The compass is meh. Not enough space or towing capacity. They don't make my perfect car I guess.

what about like a mitsubishi outlander or mazda cx 7? i believe you can get them for under 10 grand with under 100k, and both those are smaller suv's.
