I think for like sniper headshots hand eye is more important, but the pros are also really good at playing mental rock paper scissors with people and strategizing, which takes intelligence.

I think games help develop skills like peripheral vision, reaction times, and with some games like GTA navigation.

the majority of answers here will probably be derogatory but that's pretty dumb because i know you guys wouldn't make fun of pro athletes or grandmaster chess players.. being better than everyone else at ANYTHING is super impressive, gamers just have some stigma for some reason

the strategy for any video game is never really that complex. for example Halo or COD are pretty straight forward. i know that you guys will argue that some games like Battlefrield or whatever are more complicated, but i think my point still stands: that there is a set and finite maximum to any video game's strategy.
so once you develop the strategy it just comes down to skill and ability with the controller.

so although a certain amount of intelligence is required to become good, it is not enough that supreme intelligence would give an advantage over average intelligence.

Haha this reminds me. After Halo Reach was out for one year, me and my friend decided to check the stats of our one friend who had been playing non-stop since it came out. As it turns out, he actually had 2000 hours on the game. To put that into perspective; in the first year that the game was out, he played the game for almost an entire quarter of that year.

So to OP, I believe it requires hard work and dedication, above all else.

Yeah but you gotta play the game of second guessing peoples decisions at a very high level if you want to be like a halo pro, and intelligence def helps that. Also to all the people hating, pro video gamers are at the top of a game that is much bigger than almost any sport. Like literally millions of people play it competitively. So if you are are pro gamer, you probly had to go through an even more difficult trial of skill than if you tried to get good at football or baseball. Idk

People in here are correct on the fact that you can't have a life. In 9th grade I played nhl with pro players in eashl and to even remotely keep up with their numbers I had to put in at least 4 hours a day which is crazy. And to answer your question, It all depends on the game. With nhl it is just being smart but with a game like Tetris it's all hand eye.

Whatever i think if mlg pro gamers applies themselves to a sport that needed alot of hand eye coordination like tennis theyd be awesome. Walshy was an all star tennis player in hs and and all state wrestler

What would you say to all the talented HS athletes around the country? Chances are worse than slim to none that you will become a pro in the NHL, NFL, or MLB. But literally millions of kids "waste" their time devoting themselves to their sport dreaming of making it to the pro's. People can do what ever the fuck they want, who cares?

I can tell you that this isn't true. There is actually quite a bit that goes into it when you get to the top level. I used to be on one of the best COD4 teams in the world and can say that most of our success was 100% strategy and sometimes scouting. I only played for like a year before it got too intense for me but I can tell you that some of the strategy really is that complex.

How do pro gamers get paid?

I can't imagine there is much money to be split up in video game competitions? If you are ranked in the top 100 in COD or Halo will there be some company like red bull that gives you 5k a year in sponsorships or something?

Still though if your parents don't boot you from their house and are OK with you playing gmaes professionally I guess one doesn't need much money.



I actually don't think its much different than pro skiiers. Most of the people on here with orange or red or green usernames are skiing versions of pro video gamers who probably have parents with a condo on a mountain they let them be bums in and they might make a buck or two here or there in comps or a movie.

The prize money at comps is pretty big these days like around 100k for the first place team. Also some of the top mlg players get mlg contracts worth 100k or more a year. You have to be near the top to make a good living though, just like skiing, although i think there is more money in pro gaming than there is in skiing

If you have a budget of 50 million to make a video game why not set aside 2-3 million for prize money to the people who play it.

after playing on a highly competitive COD4 team for PC back in the hayday of COD4, i can tell you it is NOT easy to be a pro gamer. YOu have to invest TONS of time going over strategies and all that. stuff you don't pick up on just doing matchmaking on XBL.

i would say good for them, because no matter how stupid the sport they're playing is, their health is still greatly benefitting from being active.

A famous pro gamer. He was ranked #1 on the halo 2 rank list of all the millions of players.

Also for all the people saying it just takes time and dedication, you dont have a clue. You need to have a very special gift of talent to be headshotting and br 4 shotting all over the place. Some people are just naturally insane at moving a joystick. If the talents not there, all the dedication in the world isnt going to get you to mlg level

ha oh man this thread makes me think of freshmen year highschool when halo 3 came out...i was so set on becoming a pro gamer and every mlg tourney was like christmas to me..miss watching competitive halo, halo reach and h4 really killed the whole scene

While I appreciate and respect dedication and talent/proficiency in pretty much any pursuit of passion, gaming mostly included I guess, this is a really bad argument.

Is it honestly not obvious to you why playing actual team sports is almost guaranteed to be way more beneficial to a person?
