Upgrading bindings, reusing mounting holes

Hey NS,

Last year I made the mistake of buying marker squires because i got them really cheap. THe bindings are sufficient for landing forward but they release when I land switch and the plastic plate keeping the brakes in position cracked twice already.

Now I am thinking of upgrading my bindings. The thing is, the tech at the shop said that it is probably possible to reuse the old mounting holes if I upgrade to Griffons. My skis are really new so I wouldn't really want to get them redrilled already.

Has anyone actually done this or knows for sure that it is possible to reuse the holes if I upgrade to Griffons?

If the skis have to be redrilled I would rather spend my money on bindings with a more solid feel -> less plastic.

On the other hand: Does anyone have problems with griffons when landing switch?

P.S Yes, I have turned the dins up since, but haven't done many tricks to switch for fear of breaking the brake plate again.

In theory you can, but a remount would be much more solid.

In theory, yes you can use the same holes. Depends on the condition of the holes. When screwing in the new bindings do it by hand not with a drill less risk of the screw just continuing turning.

The other option would be to helicoil the holes that way they will be super secure.

I'm a total noob when it comes to this stuff. Is helicoil the process of filling in the holes?

My skis are now mounted centre, could they be mounted centre again if i don't reuse the holes?

I would let the shop do all this stuff.

If your using the same boot sole length then it will be hard to mount them at true center again. When i remount a pair of skis, i like to try and have 1 cm of distance between the new and old holes. Holes that are too close together will lose their integrity and have more of a change of ripping out or stripping. I would recommend going -1 or -1.5 of center

Same holes will be the best solution so long as there is no damage to the old holes. Don't heli coil unless you absolutely have to. And a remount would have to take you away from center so just reuse the old holes.

I have skied like a week on these new skis so the holes should be fine.

I turned my dins up to the max (talked to a freestyle choach and his where roughly on the same din as mine even though he is a lot lighter) and if the binding releases again when landing switch, I will just have to suck up and invest some money in griffons.

thats not necessarily true. if the tech who mounted used a drill, the holes could be screwed up already and just holding because we use glue as well. when you back out the screws to swap bindings, do it by hand and slow to minimize and deformation to the screw thread that it created when screwed in. backing them out slowly will ensure it does not ruin the thread. The screws are the same for the griffon and squire so theoretically there should not be a problem so long as the thread is in tack in the holes. just do not over tighten and use a quality waterproof glue meant for skis.

one thing that will help if you upgrade to griffons, you won't have to change the rear plate as its the same for the griffon and squire .. so theoretically you will only need to remount the front of the bindings

Ski tech here, if you want them to be in the same spot(holes) do what has been suggested earlier by using helicons. not only are you reusing the same holes but it is actually a stronger way to mount skis!. The heli coils are threaded which will give way less chance of tripping out from the core

I've never done this personally but wouldn't it work to use Quiver killers if you're going to be mounting in the exact same holes?

I'm a ski tech and I wouldn't waste your time with heli coils unless they are already stripped. Just use some Elmer's wood glue and put them back in. Not only is it the best solution but it is the easiest

Squires and Griffins have the same hole pattern so you can reuse holes as long as they're not stripped, pulled out, waterlogged, etc
You can take bindings off and on multiple times and you'll be fine, that's how I ship 99% of skis. Think of how many times you can take screws in and out of wood...
Just put a small dab of wood glue in holes before reinstalling, it is for lubrication so you don't strip out the threads, not to keep the screws in there, the previous threads will do that.
Quiver Killers/helicoils work great but the ruin ski resale value, not a big deal if you plan on keeping skis forever.
Always reuse holes when possible and fill in old ones
