Parental Dissapointment

Ill keep this short. So after this semester of college ( my 2nd) I'm planing on dropping out with no plans to return in the near future. My parents have been funding my education completly so there is sure to be a bit of dissapointment on their end.

How do you guys deal with this?

100%. Op will either work construction if he is tough enough or flip burgers. Coming from a person that made the wrong choice I am super tough on people that sounded like me ten years ago. I had the silver spoon in my mouth from blue collar parents and I fucked it up. That will be on me for the rest of my life and it has literally taken me until I am 30 to get back to where I would have been at 22 if I had stuck it out.

There is nothing wrong with working construction. Trades are where it's at right now if you want to make money.

IMO some people are taking it too far the other way now in this thread. No, you will not be a mouth breathing failure if you drop out of school. Many, many people do fine without it. However, given the means to pursue it, I see no reason not to stick it out. Mabeye you need a program switch or something, idk. I have no idea what your situation is really like OP, but just don't make any rash decisions. Talk to your parents and try to work it out.

Free ride from your parents? Do you know how many thousands of dollars that is? Thats a major hook up that could be the difference between you making actual money and...well...not.

I know there are plenty of success stories that didnt get a "formal" education. But if they were given the chance to get that stupid piece of paper that somehow legitimizes your whole being in a certain field without having to pay for it. they most likely would have jumped at it.

I hope you understand that I also think college for most is a crock of shit/ money suck. But its also the most free-time i've ever had (most consistent skiing I've ever done in my life for sure) and I met/lived with a ton of awesome people during that time.

I'm also sure I wouldn't have scored my recent employment without it. I don't get to ski as much now, but at least i've got health benefits so I don't need to quit skiing over an injury.

So, do yourself a favor, Tough it out. You'll be thankful you did later

Maybe you should have stayed in school. You might have learned something instead of pushing the outdated as fuck idea that if you don't go to school your only option is flipping burgers or working construction.


So you hate yourself for your personal experiences. That's fine just don't put that on everyone else. If it really bothers you that bad go back to school and get a degree. Nobody is stopping you.

Instead of being "super tough on people" that sound like you deal with your own problems and either move past it or do something to change.

So college is a crock of shit but it's 100% worth while because you had free time, met people, and skied a lot? Are you serious?

You could get set up with plenty of free time, awesome people, and lot's of skiing for far less than college costs.

He did...that's what he is saying, is that he is in the same place at "30"...he's actually 29, that he would be at @ 22-- if he would have stayed in school he would have instead had his degree at 22...

Also...I think its fairly obvious that he's using "flipping burgers" as a term to apply to any low-end service job-- retail, restaurants..etc.

He was in construction for 9 years, so was speaking from experience. Construction pays good money, but if you're in a trade that requires hard manual labor, your body will be shot well before retirement age-- its back breaking work for some of the trades. Nothing wrong with construction but I think he's just making the point that your options are limited to construction and service jobs without an education.

Are you thinking about your neighborhood? Your city? Your state?...open your mind and think a little broader-- globally, yes, the amount of people afforded the opportunity to go to college is the minority--especially on their parents dime. 6.7% of the world has a college degree.

The dude is just lamenting his mistakes since OP asked for input. No need to get butthurt simply because somebody acknowledges that not going to college is an inherently risky decision.

And if you have the means to go to college, what the fuck do you have to gain by not going? What opportunities does one forego because they were too lazy and wanted to jerk off for four years?

Medical School. Dropped out because they refused to acknowledge the coat hanger as the proper tool it is. They said it was barbaric. I stood up and said NO! Then I was dragged out by security and told to never come back.

OP. you're probably reading through all these thinking that no one gets what you're actually going through. My parents wanted to send me to a private school and hey forced me to go. At first, i didn't want to start over. I was going to tell them I was transferring back to my public high school so they wouldn't have to waste 20k a year on a place i'd be miserable. But, it's what my parents wanted me to do so I stuck with it just so I could finally make them proud and it was honestly the best decision i have ever made in my life. I'm happy beyond belief. I know college seems like it sucks right now but I'm telling you, you put your heart and soul into it and you will live a prosperous life where you will be happy. Don't drop out, man. You can do this you just gotta push yourself to do it. Fuck I sound like a therapist. Well, whatever your choice is, I hope you live a good life. Your parents will get over it because they love you and thats a fact and they will respect your decision in the end.

i have decent input to this not on dropping out but on the parental disappointment. I'm a sophomore in college on my parents dime. I went to the school I'm still at to play lacrosse. I got a pretty solid scholarship to play here in college. 3 weeks into fall lacrosse this year i quit the team. i just didn't love the whole college lacrosse thing it was to serious for me. i didn't tell my parents i was thinking about quitting until after i had quit. the next day my tuition doubled and my parents are not made at me for quitting because they knew i was not happy playing but they are mad i did not tell them so we could all talk about it. now i have to pay for half my school!

I did two years of school, but didn't know what I wanted to pursue (initially I wanted to be a teacher, but didn't work out). I lost motivation and grades started falling (and it's an expensive way to find a career) so I dropped out. I worked a few jobs over the next few years, figured out what I wanted to do and then went back to school. I had basically completed all my basic courses in my first two years and finished my degree in another two. Not the quickest way to figure life out, but it seemed to work.

That said, my parents didn't pay for my education. Maybe that changes how things are done?

if your head isn't in it and you're getting shitty grades, drop out. it's a lot easier to get back in later if you didn't completely shit the bed on your first attempt.

if you do drop out, do something productive rather than smoking pot and dicking around on the internet all day.

OP dont drop out. Youll regret it. I know a guy who went to college after HS and then dropped out to work. He lived in a shitty apartment and worked construction and regretted it. He is now back in college and doing a lot better living with grandparents and taking care of them and working, so just stay in school because if you dont youll just sit around or work a boring day job instead of learning what you want to learn.
