I'm curious to hear from the under 25 crowd around here... do you see evidence of this in your world? Do you not give a shit about facebook and actually not check it that much?

basically the only reason I still use it is to keep in contact with my family. If I lived in the same city as my family I would not be using facebook.

ive deffitanly noticed kids my age moving on to twitter instagrama other social networking site. i keep mine because i see lots of edits and other ski related things and i stay in contact with ski buddies and people from ak with it

lots of kids at my school are on the twitter. i use it but mostly for sports and other shit. most of the kids just piss and moan about petty bullshit.

there is definitely a push towards twitter within my group of friends. a couple of my buddies deleted their facebook profiles, but they were people who never spent much time on them in the first place.

however, i will add this

i was in costa rica last summer taking a ferry from puntarenas to the peninsula (whose name escapes me) on the pacific side. it was about 2 in the afternoon, and somewhat rainy as it in costa rica quite often, so many of the passengers were squeezed into a large cafeteria type room in the middle of the ferry. and the thing was, there was so much conversation and face to face social interaction that it was extremely loud in there. nobody was on their phones, or laptops, or sitting in quiet contempt looking out the windows as would be expected in a subway in NYC or similar. nearly everyone was just talking to another person, whether it be their best friend or a complete stranger.

say what you want about technology, but in my experience it definitely has a damper on social interactions in real life.

im with you 100% it seems like when i go to partys every one is on their phone doing something. you really need to go to a party and be on your phone talking to other peoplebesides whos at the party.
maybe im just not on the in at highschool partys

Its crazy to think about how all these social media networks rely solely on the content of its users...nothing more. If people start leaving, less content is created which makes it boring for other users then making a snowball effect.

I check it maybe once or twice a day but don't really use it for much more than communicating with some school clubs/messaging friends videos/pictures. I haven't posted something on my wall in over a year and now that my timeline is only people liking vines, memes, and pages with no actual content from my friends I find it less and less interesting.

Instagram though I am a HUGE fan of. In my eyes it promotes a sort of artistic side to things, gives me a medium to share my "iphonography" and keeps me shooting/editing; even if its just with my phone.

I just use Facebook for the chat now really. I mean, it's sort of like a news aggregator thing. Of course there's people who make dumb statuses and whatever. I didn't have one on high school.

Don't all little kids want 1000 Instagram followers and subscribers to their YouTube channel now? That's what it seems like to me.

Still doesn't make sense. My issue with Facebook isn't with who runs it. I just like Instagram more because it's not full of my friends posting "OMG Best Vine Compilations."

I deleted my Facebook last month because it got to a point where 90% of what I saw on there was just complete trash.

Like shitty high school classmates posting about their shitty opinions, retarded statuses, ugly sluts trying their best to look like a whore, more retarded statuses, seeing your ex and her new boyfriend kissing in a Ferris Wheel. More ugly sluts. The list goes on.

My problem with facebook is the illusion it paints that people are living better lives than you are. On fb, you are generally bombarded with pictures showing off positive things people are doing. Vacations, partying, shredding etc. It does not usually highlight the day to day activities in someone's life. So, a lot of the time people think "so and so" is living such a better life. When in reality, they might not actually be happy.

Right now I'm a senior in high school and the only thing I use facebook for is to know what's going on with my lacrosse team. If I don't go on facebook and check our page I miss out on information I need as a captain. After lacrosse season is over, I will probably rarely go on facebook anymore.

Didn't read the thread, just felt like posting. Deleted mine in January 2012, haven't had one since. Did it because a) avoiding procrastination and b) read/heard some thing about increased happiness without it. I wasn't unhappy before but I'm happy now so who knows?

Almost no one in my HS use Facebook anymore, everyone uses twitter, but my brother said at his college they still all use fb. So I guess it has turned back into a college thing again.

something that i also think is turning people away from facebook is that the older generation is starting to use it. you don't really want them looking at the pictures of you partying and stuff, but it would be mean to deny a friend request from a family member.

then suddenly there's that one aunt who somehow comments on every post you make and it gets annoying as fuck

I would consider myself somewhat of a Facebook junkie I suppose. I dont know why though, scrolling through my feed is just agony to my retinas since most people use it as a platform for sharing stupid images from Reddit or whatever. I have unfollowed a majority of all the people Im friends with, which feels so lame because it sort of defeats the purpose with Facebook I guess. Why cant I just delete friends I dont like seeing stuff from? I hate that it is seen as rude or awkward.


I realised a few weeks ago that I basically never ever drunk text people, but what I do is add everyone Ive ever met and their grandmother, on Facebook. Like, why add someone youve met at a party once, and who youre most likely never ever going to meet again, or even interact with online? Retarded. I need to do a big purge soon, I have way too many randos in my "friends" list.


I deactivated my account this fall because it took up way too much of my time, made me unfocused and stressed because I felt the need to keep myself updated with what was going on. People honestly thought I was depressed or that something had happened (i.e. my family had deleted it because I had died or something).

The main reason I dont want to get rid of it completely is because of the chat function. Sometimes I wish fucking MSN was still a thing, it was the shit. I have way too many people that are scattered not just around the country but the world, so if I decided to delete my FB completely I reckon I would lose much if not all of the contact I have with a lot of cool people.

I completely agree with you with all the super annoying posts, pictures, articles etc and I know a lot of people who have deleted their FB because of that, and in this thread people have done the same. I see a MUCH simplier option which is what ive done, delete those FB "friends" so then you dont have to see that anymore ha. Ive been thinning out my FB quite a bit since college and it feels good! also it makes for a much better experience. And im not trying to be rude, but to blame FB website because you added people who now constantly annoy you it isnt their fault. It's yours.

I still use my facebook a bit. But mainly as most people have said to use the chat function and keep up to date with people who live away from me. If someone's posts are annoying me I either delete them or am amused by how stupid they are.

I rarely update my status, only when something really interesting happens like I go overseas. Most of my events are organised through facebook, so I feel like I would miss out on a lot of them if I delted my facebook. Same with event photos, if I didn't have a facebook I would never see them.

Out of the age range... But Facebook has turned into a travel feed for me. I deleted all the fucks from highschool and the random weirdos. Then I hid the babies and weddings. Now I log into Facebook and see my family and friends from around the world and many of my friends are also traveling and doing stuff. There are a lot less whiny statuses and a lot more photo albums and group updates.

I think an issue with teens is that they just don't have interesting stuff happening most of the time. There friends and family are all near by. Twitter works fine for updates and Instagram is enough for your mediocre selfies.

One chick from my school who had a child was assigned to be my partner for English, and instead of the actual work were were supposed to do, she vented to me about baby problems and how much her life sucks and how stressed she is all the time. I was like dammmm

Deleted mine a couple weeks ago. Was never really into it so it wasnt that hard to do. Prego chicks, mongoloids from high school and spammers were contributing factors. thought about removing a couple hundred "friends" but said fuck it in the end

The last decade has seen the rise of immense online social networks (OSNs) such as MySpace and Facebook. In this paper we use epidemiological models to explain user adoption and abandonment of OSNs, where adoption is analogous to infection and abandonment is analogous to recovery. We modify the traditional SIR model of disease spread by incorporating infectious recovery dynamics such that contact between a recovered and infected member of the population is required for recovery. The proposed infectious recovery SIR model (irSIR model) is validated using publicly available Google search query data for "MySpace" as a case study of an OSN that has exhibited both adoption and abandonment phases. The irSIR model is then applied to search query data for "Facebook," which is just beginning to show the onset of an abandonment phase. Extrapolating the best fit model into the future predicts a rapid decline in Facebook activity in the next few years.

apparently you can no longer delete your facebook but you can deactivate it. i tried to delete mine a few months ago and all i could do is deactivate it. then i realized that i needed it to get in contact with people so i reactivated it. fuck facebook and its addictive social entertainment

I'm 21 and haven't had one for about 2 years now. It just got real annoying to me and i figured that the people who I wan't to keep up to date with that they'd be in my phone contacts. I don't need to see what people are up to and i don't want them all up in my shit either. phone calls and texts have been working fine for me

This. I delete people IDGAF about, and I follow a lot of ski industry, health and news pages. I see news on Facebook. I've lived in a ton of places, so I keep in touch with people through facebook. It's easier to remember to stay in touch with people when you're regularly seeing them on your news feed. I'm just not that great at calling/texting. Most of my feed is hilarious, ski related, or at least interesting. Why delete that?

yeah i really never post on facebook besides the occasional comment or like. i update my profile pic every few months or so, and thats about it. i look through my news feed when im bored on my phone before bed or something. i don't mind fb, but i definitely used it much more a few years back. i don't spend much time on it, so i don't really see any point in deleting it. i have zero gripes with it, i just don't find it that entertaining/interesting anymore
