Anyone planning on going? Supposively there are millions of people expected. I know sure as hell I'm going. I dunno about the million people, but I'm sure it will be a lot. Anyone else going? It's January 20, 2005.

^Anew: Well, that's pretty much what I've seen throughout this thread (aside from a brief and highly amusing interlude from jarjar).

Jiboregon, if you're going to criticize representative democracy, you'd best provide an alternative... it really is the best option. Are you criticizing it? It wasn't clear from your post. The electoral college, meanwhile, really is flawed, but again, what would you replace it with?

thank you to the person above who actually showed backed evidence that protesting does good things, and i mean dude in school if u get an answer wrong and u think its right.. are u just onna sit there and lose the points and not back y u put that answer? y should i sit here with a president who is taking my social security away when i can go out and voice my opinion? who cares if nothing is done but at least i can kno that i went out there and let the dude kno how i feel

dude JD, when it comes to the presidential vote, I'd like to think that it wouldnt be that hard to eliminate the electoral college and instead of each state getting a # of electoral votes etc, we could just go to a direct election with the popular vote being the vote that decides who is elected. Id like to think it would have saved us from being in the hole we're in right nor

The very correct criticism of that policy is that it centres a HUGE amount of power in urban centres. You're right, it would have solved the 'problem' we've got in that Bush would not have been elected, but it would not ahve been fair in any way. You might as well just not let the farmers vote at all.

I would like to protest, hopefully I will be there. The electoral college really should be abolished, I feel that it is the largest flaw in the government. It is far from democratic as is America in my opinion.

but theoretically if we abolish the electoral college, wont it just be the popular vote, no sort of reward for winning states, it takes states out of the picture and focuses on the people instead of the area where they live? I'd like to think that in the current situation it really negates the oppinions of those people in lesser populated states

Because areas with heavy population (LA, NYC, any major city) vote overwhelmingly for the democrats. Therefore, placing the emphasis on popular vote will give the dems an undue advantage. Take a look:

dude if you abolish the electoral college and just go by the person who gets the most vots wins, how would it matter whether urban areas vote democrat or not?

el gato, but the person who gets the most overall votes (not electoral college votes) does not always win. so really it is not by the people.

and ec-tom....why should people stop bitching..did you read none of the comments? its their right and responsability to protest what they believe is unfair.

another problem with representative gov't is... how do you pick who is responsable for what region? and who do you pick to represent that region...from what side (dem or rep) gets to sit and speak for the region?

Karl Rove is an absolute political genius. He knew that religion and 'moral values' would be the deciding factor of the election. A lot of people that voted Bush even said that those were the single most important factors when choosing a president.

People that are protesting are doing so because they feel that there were other issues that needed tending to before something such as gay marriage.

Telling someone not to protest is rediculous. It's their right to say something if they disagree. Believe me, if kerry was elected the 'pro-life' people would be out protesting.

^look at the ratio of protesters at the DNC to protesters at the RNC. im not saying there wouldnt be protests, but there sure as hell wouldnt be as many as there are going to be now.

All you people argueing that bush was elected democratically and we should stop bitching are neglecting the fact that because it is a democracy and our idiot president was democratically elected we have the democratic right to protest. Why should we shut up because it's over?

Look on the bright side: There was that one dude who killed himself over bush getting reelected; maybe some cult will do a mass suicide along with an assasination.

Correction: The majority of Germans didnt have anything to do with hiter coming to power, some stupid officials put him in for what would be a temporary puppeteering thing. I forget why, but yea, then hitler passed that bill saying he could make his own laws so that he could build the economy or whatever.
