if i could, i would love to be there protesting. and, OpIvy, im sure youve already gotten this reply to your first post, but one of the greatest parts of a democracy is being able to protest or petition the govt. we're just as free to protest bush's election as we (actually, i wont say we, i'll say you--everyone--who supported bush) are to elect him.

i don;t get americans, who are pround of their country but believe people who protest to be stupid.

i would hope at no time would the right to protest be taken away (more than it already has).

to the pepole who insist that the other 49% just sit there and take 4 mroe years i say, shut up, you live in a democracy with rights. a right to protest and to show dissent is one of the greatest rights you have.

and i don;t think protesting has anything to do in being rude. i bet when a protester gets a police baton in the face, that could be considered rude, or when a man in iraq wakes up to find the half of his house where his children were sleeping is blown apart, he could consider that rude.

the whole point in protesting is to get as much attention to a casue as possible. inaguration day is the best time for that. problem is, protesters will be kept as far away as possible from the motorcade and media coverage, it is possible there will be little done.

and jarjar...chill out man, you do ramble when you argue, much worse than i do. you don;t need to try and prove how smart you are with other posts (your essays and what not), and i got a gold star in grade 2 french, does that make me the king of the world?

Part of a democracy is protest you numbskulls.

Seems you're not entirely familiar with Locke's Social Contract Theory, or for that matter the history of protest.

Just because Derek's (and my) democratic nation voted Bush in, doesn't mean he should shrug and move on, he has an inherent right to protest.

And any numbnut that suggested he move to a different country, or that he might be happier with a dictatorship, wow - your problem solving skills are positively stupidendous.

Part of democracy is dissatisfaction, and protesting or going against the supposed majority, doesn't make you an idiot.

didn't read the third page, the first two were entertaining enough.

Here is the general reason that the right doesn't really understand protesting, it isn't that affective. Yes it does have impact, yes it can change policy, but only because someone is pushed into a box/corner. If thousands show up the only reason something would change is because of... public/world opinion of the event and the presidents policy. It's called negative re-enforcement in psychology and it is known to not have any long term benefits.

So what does work? Becoming active and striving for change within the system. That is why the left gets so upset, do you really think it's coincidence that the republicans swept the election (they did, pres and now both houses are on the right, not that I think all three should be or agree with it but they did)? No, they have been working for years to discover how to get their policies into practice and are just as passionate as the left. They developed their echo chamber (media) so that the leftist media must carry stories that make the left look poor, they've unified and support one another, and I guess the biggest thing is that they stick to their guns. You guys are upset because you feel as though you know exactly what bush is going to do in the next four years... and to be honest he probably will. What was kerry going to do? I'm not sure even he knew that answer.

Alrighty, here is a tad bit of information for all of you 'anti-protestors' out there.

I have been patiently reading this thread for the last couple of days and I have been trying really hard to bite my tongue and just not reply. But yeah, enough is enough.

For all of you who say protesting gets you nowhere... I have a few simple questions for you.

Take a look at your mother/sister/aunt etc. Can they go out into the world, purchase items, and claim them as theirs? Can they get an education and use it in the work?

If you are an African American, can you sit on the bus in ANY seat you choose to sit in? Can you drink from ANY water fountain in your city/ schools etc.? Can you walk into ANY bar/ restaurant and order a meal?

This next one might be a little closer to home. Do you drink beer? vodka? or any other alcohol for that matter?

There are more questions I can ask, but for the sake of keeping this relatively short, I will just stop there.

Now, if you answered YES to ANY of the questions above then you can thank protesters for that. You can thank The Women's Rights Movement if you answered yes to either of the first questions and you can thank Rosa Parks among others if you said yes to the second questions. As far as the third questions, you can also thank society for not putting up with the Prohibition Act of 1920. You can thank the PROTESTERS who fought for these rights. Although the fight against the Prohibition Act of the 1920’s was not your “typical protest� with picket lines and petitions, it was still a form of protest regardless of the way they went about it.

So the next time you want to say sth like protesting wont get you anywhere, look around you, look at what you’re doing, look at your rights etc. Would you be doing these things, seeing these things if it wasn’t for ppl who protested? Would you have these rights if ppl did not fight for them through protests?

Again, I can go on and elaborate a lot more on this subject, but I will spare you all. Read some of these links, do some research and open up your minds.

Rule by the many... there are a multitude of conditions that need to be met (like universal suffrage for those of mental faculty, which is only a fact in theory, the full education of all voters as to their options, and an identifiably and entirely suitable option for all involved in the process), but they're a little unrealistic for a nation of 300 million people. The point is that while the country likes to proclaim is democratic perfection to the world, there is no nation without flaws in its system, and there are serious problem with the American one, whether you like to admit it or not... and I know you won't like to. God forbid someone criticize the US... they must be whiners.

Everything is perfect, just shut up and live with the system, and all will be well... right.
