I'm taking my girlfriend skiing for the first time this weekend and I've been debating whether I should give her poles or let her go without. I learned without poles but I love using them now. I know there are a billion pole threads but none that relate to my problem. Could you help me out?
no poles! I learnt without and it helped me focus more one how to turn my skis and eventually learn how to parallel. Beginners with poles just look really dumb and awkward, they kind of hover them above the ground never digging them into the snow.
I vote for no poles starting out. Most people don't use poles "properly" . I've seen lots of people struggle when they are learning and trying to rely on their poles too much. Until she knows what she is doing it will be frustrating for her to try to use the poles to leverage herself off of the ground etc.
By definition she should be...unless OP is gay? And to answer you seriously, yeah, give her poles. She most likely won't be able to skate so the poles are her only way of moving across flat terrain.
Of course you should give her poles, they will help her balance. However i also believe later on is a good practice doing some turns without' em. Best choice is, gettin' a teacher for her, and you hit the mountain!
