They have safety mechanisms in place to prevent this. No need to fret young one.

The unloading zone would have to be one of those huge airbags or a foam pit haha

Rollbacks can happen, although they are rare. Small rollbacks are slightly more frequent and they aren't usually noticed by the people on the line.

The rollback videos were shot in Winter Park on a lift that WP was replacing, so the Colorado Tramboard staged an absolute worst case scenario on the lift. They disabled everything in order to make that happen. A simple press of the E-brake stop everything, because they enable the bullwheel brake and they sawed off that brake in order to do this test. Fun stuff though!

I was a liftie at CB for 3 years and the lifts are extremely safe, and though no completely idiot proof...it takes a lot for a lift to rollback. That said there are numerous other ways for things to go wrong on a lift....

In Canada, lifts have to an anti rollback brake, either on the haul rope or bullwheel, if the lift rolls back more 30cm (depends on manufactures spec) then the anti rollback brake automatically engages.

a roll back happened at a hill near me a few years ago. its called Devil's Head and the time I remember going there (before the accident) all the lifts were old and slow as molasses. I think a few people were injured and taken to the hospital. It was pretty nasty and I remember never wanting to go back after it happened.

Oh most definitely! Anti-rollback brakes are required by the Colorado Tramboard too. Not to mention if the slightly backwards movement of the haul rope is detected, the CPUs apply the rollback brake immediately. While working at the mountain that shall remain nameless, there was a slight rollback on one of the old two seater we have. The same day, it caught fire and had to be shut down for the year. Crazy day! Aaaand, that was the day that the Colorado Tramboard was doing their inspection at our resort. It was a close one!
